189076887Mismarck D.Y.: Benton Transportation Comoany 1890. Original annual pass 3 7/8 x 2 1/2 inches bearing the company name and steel engraved vignettes of Bismarck the N.P Bridge and Fort Benton. Issued to Frank M. Baker and signed by the company superintendent Isaac P. Baker. Printed on the verso are the terms for the use of this pass. The verso has four very old spots that indicate this was once tipped into an album. A very clean and bright passThe Benton Transportation Company was one of the most successful steamship companies carrying goods and people the almost 600 miles from Bismarck D.T. to Fort Benton to Fort Benton. M.T. then the westernmost place navigable on the Missouri River. Goods from all over the populated East could ship their cargo to Bismarck by train and then have it delivered to still wild and wooly West made it a vital point of commerce from the 1860s to the 1880s. After the railroads foremost among them the Great Northern made transportation quicker and cheaper steamship transportation began to fade away. The fact that this pass was issued to Frank M. Baker. General Superintendent of the Addison & Pennsylvania Railway as late as 1891 does indicate that it was still active enough for Superintendents of other railroad companies to have cause to visit it. Frank Benton later became a New York State Railway Commissioner. Benton Transportation Comoany unknown
192162358Seattle WA & Cooke City MT: Western Smelting & Power Company 1921. Oblong 4to. 10 x 7 in. 47 1 pp. With photo plates text illustrations 1 large folding map. Textured beige softcovers raised embossed copper decorative lettering front cover yapp fore-edges slight toning minor shelfwear still a VG bright copy. First edition of this exceedingly rare mining investment prospectus issued following World War I by The Western Smelting & Power Company to raise money to build their two-part aerial tramway system to connect the Homestake and Gold Dust mines to the Company’s copper smelter just completed in 1921. The WS&P Co. had already built a 350 kilowatt hydro-electric power plant near the 53 foot “Big Fall†waterfall on the Clark’s Fork River which featured a quarter mile wooden flume to carry water to the plant and in fact the flume required so much lumber they had also constructed a sawmill producing 800000 board feet of timber. When completed the tram operated at a speed of 12 mph and was capable of delivering 250 tons of ore to their smelter every six hours. Although the tram was completed four years later there is no evidence either the smelter or tram was in operation by 1926 and the company never reached commercial production. By late 1926 the Gold Dust Adit had reached 2100 and had not tapped the Homestake’s ore body and in 1929 the WS&P Co. had failed to stockpile any ore. Eventually the smelter was converted to 1000-ton flotation plant and destroyed by fire in 1988. The Map depicts “Claims surveyed for patent and principal locations New World unor Mining District Park County MT. 201 pages of profoundly fascinating and delightful illustrated history. Author's father (b. 1870) left Yorkshire, England with his young family for Canada in 1909 and arrived in Fife Lake, Saskatchewan where they spent their first winter in a straw house. Author was born in a sod house in 1910 and moved with his family to Montana when he was 6 years old. At age 14 the family moved to Victoria, B.C. and from there to Nanoose Bay, further up Vancouver Island. Most pages contain brief text, accompanied by the author's simple sketches of the way things were. He has stressed the most practical elements of daily life and survival. A priceless compilation of the challenges and genius of the pioneer. Examples include: how to hunt prairie antelope by wearing a white sheet; avoiding flying ants by erecting a pole to your wagon and hanging a coat at its top; uprooting stumps by tying them to nearby trees to be felled; cutting wood by rigging a buzzsaw to the back wheel of a Model "T" Ford truck; and many, many more. Mentions Vancouver Island landmarks such as the Arlington Hotel, Lantzville Hotel, Quarterway Hotel, and more. This book lends itself wonderfully to teaching youngsters the ways of the not-so-distant past. You will have great difficulty in putting it down. Book
