1887020089AMC Appalachian Mountain Club 1887. No Binding. Near Fine. Appalachian Mountain Club. Map of the White Mountains. Boston: Forbes and Co. 1887. Scale 1/100000. App. 29.50' x 23.75". Several seam splits edge chips to the covers. This is the first separate map offered by the AMC at a cost of 50 cents. The following is provided by Adam Jared Apt on his website description for whitemountainhistory: "This was the first pocket map separately issued by the AMC. Starting in the late 18th century cartographers developed several alternative methods of using hachures to convey relief. This map although issued ten years after the first contour maps of the White Mountains eschews contour lines and instead is the first to apply one of these systems of hachures to the White Mountains to create an impression of contours. It and the Pickering map of 1882 are the only ones to use the AMC's novel system of mountain nomenclature which soon after fell into desuetude. In addition to the complex system of hachures this map uses esoteric icons perhaps unique to this map of circles and arcs on the summits of peaks to convey information about the terrain. Other states and editions: The AMC issued this map at the scale of 1/150000 also in 1887. This smaller version was included in later editions of M. F. Sweetser The White Mountains: A Handbook for Travellers." 'For Sale by Clarke and Carruth 340 Washington Street Boston. Price 50 cents.' printed on the rear cover. This map is one the rarest AMC maps ever produced and the only offered here for sale.

AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) unknown

190446667Hot Spring: Mountain Park Hotel 1904. 1904. NORTH CAROLINA. First edition. 16mo. 16 x 9 cm 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" original red bi-fold pictorial wrappers printed in black with lettering and small illustrations hand-colored in silver illustrated with nine full-page and several in-text photographs. A charming pamphlet advertising one of the premier Southern resorts of its day. The 200-room Mountain Park Hotel offered a grand ballroom billiards bowling tennis riding stables and a golf course. The Wana-Luna Golf Club organized 1895 incorporated 1898 was one of the first in the region and employed a "competent professional golf instructor." Guests could take the hot mineral springs in a modern bathhouse that offered massage. The health benefits of the waters ranging in temperature from 96 to 110 degrees are touted here an analysis of their mineral content is provided by C.F. Chandler and C.E. Pellew and notice is given of a resident doctor under the direction of prominent Asheville physician Samuel Westray Battle. However this was no sanitarium and the pamphlet announces that "no consumptives will be received." Above all the Mountain Park Hotel was a "pleasure resort" with social opportunities including dining card parties dancing and music recitals. Guests traveled from throughout the East to visit Hot Springs which was served directly by the Southern Railway. The pamphlet details the railroad connections from major cities and provides a list of travel agents. Illustrations include a bird's-eye view of the resort various views of the hotel and grounds the ballroom the bathhouse and the railway. The Mountain Park Hotel was built in 1886 by an investment group The Southern Improvement Co. In 1891 they sold it to Col. James Rumbaugh a leading figure in the town and the owner of an earlier hotel in this location. From January to June 1904 the hotel was managed by Edgar B. Moore here identified as the proprietor who also ran the Kenilworth Inn in Asheville and the Gladstone on Narragansett Pier and who leased part of the Biltmore Estate grounds for a hunting and fishing club. An ad for the Kenilworth Inn appears on the final page of this pamphlet. Moore’s brief tenure as manager of the Mountain Park Hotel ended in a nationally publicized controversy. On June 17 John C. Rumbough acting as agent for his parents took possession of the hotel citing the failure of Moore to comply with certain terms of his lease Rumbough alleged he had not maintained the hotel furnishings and grounds in good order. According to Moore he was threatened by armed men and unlawfully arrested which lead to stories such as “Armed Men in Possession of Hotel” New York Tribune July 5 and “War of Hotel Men” New York Times July 6 and to Moore suing Rumbough for $50000 for damages and false arrest. Rumbough denied Moore’s allegations and characterized his actions as peaceful and lawful. He managed the hotel briefly before finding another proprietor. The Mountain Park Hotel was destroyed by fire in 1920 and never rebuilt. Remnants of the foundation can be seen on the grounds of the present-day resort. Modest wear to the right upper corner and light creasing to the lower edge of the first leaf else a lovely fine copy and an important North Carolina landmark. Mountain Park Hotel, [1904]. unknown

1935233251935. Clarkston Valley earthquake photo archive documenting structural damage in southwestern Montana after the June 27 1925 earthquake one of the strongest recorded earthquakes in Montana before the 1959 Hebgen Lake disaster. The main shock struck near the Clarkston Valley north of Three Forks and northwest of Bozeman caused severe damage across roughly 600 square miles and was felt across an estimated 310000 square miles. Brick buildings suffered heavily in Manhattan Three Forks Logan and nearby communities while cliffs shed rock ground cracks opened chimneys fell and aftershocks continued through the following days. The absence of fatalities was widely noted as fortunate since schools churches public buildings and roads took the brunt of the damage rather than crowded urban districts.

Photo archive of 7 silver gelatin photos approximately 3" x 5" Gallatin County and surrounding Montana communities 1925. A dirt road is split by a long open fissure running down the track recording visible ground rupture or surface cracking after the quake. Several brick school buildings show collapsed rooflines broken cornices damaged upper walls and debris piled along foundations. Handwritten verso captions identify "public school Manhattan 23 mi from Bozeman" "High school Manhattan 23 mi from Bozeman" "Logan school 19 mi from Bozeman" "Consolidated school Three Forks 40 mi from Bozeman" and "Church Three Forks 40 mi from Bozeman." One captioned view reads "Logan School Mont. Earthquake" with damage visible along the roof and upper brickwork. The accompanying clipping summarizes the earthquake as measuring M6.6 notes damage in Manhattan Three Forks and Lombard and describes later seismological interpretation of the Clarkston Valley fault.

The archive preserves a local record of disaster damage in rural Montana where public schools and churches often stood as the largest masonry structures in small towns and therefore made earthquake destruction immediately visible. The 1925 Clarkston Valley event became a major reference point in Montana seismic history later studied by J. T. Pardee for the U.S. Geological Survey and still cited in state earthquake preparedness materials. Light toning minor handling wear and faint soiling to versos; manuscript captions remain legible and image detail is strong. Overall in good condition. unknown
