Mount is creased and bumped in a few places with a small split and a small loss at bottom right. Photograph is only lightly rubbed but still unfaded and with nice contrasts. Shows several workers on and around the bridge. Written in contemporary pen on the front of the mount in the margins: "First Bridge across river above Main Dam at Thompson Falls Montana. Text is the original 1885 printing approved in April 1884 and certified by Attorney General William Breeden on March 28th 1885. This compilation was the first compilation of New Mexico Territory law since 1865; it was commissioned in 1884 by the Legislative Assembly for the purpose of compiling "all the laws general local and private which shall be in force on the fifth day of May 1884." Intended to be comprehensive this edition was published in one volume in English and Spanish and includes the Constitution of the United States the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo the Gadsden Treaty the original act organizing the territory the original Kearny code and a list of laws specifically enacted since the 1865 compilation. The commissioners - Edward L. Bartlett Charles W. Greene and Santiago Valdez along with secretary Ireneo L. Chaves - were appointed by Governor Lionel Allen Sheldon at a rate of six dollars each daily. Book is in good condition original covers chipped bumped rubbed marked and scraped; spine is cracked and missing a 1/2" corner; bottom of new leatherette spine has a white mark; edges of textblock are dustsoiled and stained with a dark black mark on the foreedge affecting pp.446-488; some pages are lightly stained with corners folded but are generally otherwise clean albeit toning slightly; copyright page has a 1" tear to the top. 1736pp. incl. index. Large poster for the sale of fifty-two head of cattle from the herd of noted Montana rancher A.B. Cook. Andrew B. Cook 1864-1928 was a Montana railroad contractor and internationally-known cattle breeder and rancher with a farm in Broadwater County. The poster features numerous images of cows with the headliners being the "six great sires" Cuba's Panama Beau Carlos Fairfax 16th Premier 3D Panama 34th and Panama 100th. Aside from its handsome bovines the poster features lineage charts for two of the bulls and a blurb about the superior breeding methods employed by Cook. The verso features a half-sheet headlined "Illustrating the Get of the Grand Champion Fairfax 16th in the Sale" and a quarter panel illustrating "Six of the Granddaughters of Cuba's Panama All Sired by Panama 4th." In part: "It is hereby certified that the Territory of Montana is indebted to Ira H. Ming in the sum of One Hundred Dollars redeemable at the pleasure of the Territory after the 1st day of June 1870 and payable on the 1st day of June 1873 with interest." Dated June 1 1868. Signed by: James Tufts Secretary of the Territory; W.H. Rodgers Auditor; and W.G. Barkley Treasurer. The embossed seal of Montana Territory is at the lower left of the bond. Attached to the bond are three coupons printed in blue each for the sum of $7.50 and each signed by Ming Rodgers and Barkley Judge James Tufts 1829-1884 was born in Charlestown New Hampshire was graduated from Middlebury College in 1855 and was admitted to the bar in 1857. He moved west to Niobrara Nebraska Territory in 1859 where he became a probate judge. Tufts moved on to Dakota Territory in 1861 and served as secretary for the legislative council there. In 1862 he was appointed US Commissioner to adjust military claims. Tufts moved to Idaho Territory in 1862 served in the Idaho Territorial Legislature and was first speaker of their House of Representatives. In 1867 he was appointed Secretary for Montana Territory and served as Montana's acting governor in 1868-1869. He ran to be Montana's delegate to the US House of Representatives lost the election and moved back to Nebraska to farm and practice law. Montana Democrat Print unknown
