The NP RR souvenir view book includes images of Dakota wheat fields Custer Battlefield monument Crow Indians at Yellowstone Montana cattle roundups and gold mining along the Columbia River with birds-eye views of Butte & Helena MT Spokane WA and salmon fishwheel as well as early birds-eye view of Portland OR. Views of Alaska include Sitka Juneau Totem Poles on Wrangel Island and the glaciers. The piece concludes with birds-eye view of San Francisco. W.C. One boudoir-sized hand-coloured albumen photograph sized 8.5 x 5.5 in. mounted w/in beveled studio frame mount sized 12 x 9 in. w/ printed backing on verso pencil mark indicating which image this one is minor age toning to mount & verso backing faint sunning to the delicate hand-colouring still a VG bright image. First edition of this 3rd boudoir hand-coloured albumen photo of Yellowstone Park from the portfolio of 12 commissioned by the Northern Pacific Railroad representing scenic landscape vistas in the historic park. Haynes 1853-1921 was the renowned official photographer of Yellowstone National Park whose photographs fueled the sales of stereographs postcards books articles and journals on the American West from the 1870s until his retirement in 1916. the Northern Pacific maintained a special railroad car for Haynes equipped as a mobile photography studio and in 1889 first opened a studio in St. Paul MN. Eventually Frank Haynes would produce yearly Haynes Guidebooks and his son Jack Haynes 1884-1962 would later take over after his death operating by 1962 thirteen Haynes Photo Shops in the Park. 189064731Dalton Ga: Printed by the A.J. Showalter Co 1890. Broadside printed on green paper. A bold title double-rule text in four columns the whole enclosed in a key meander border. 36 cm. Old fold lines with a bit of wear along one vertical fold with loss of a few letters; some fading along folds but overall a nice copy. Accompanied by an envelope moderately soiled and spotted printed with the image of Dr. Joe and "Compliments of Dr. Blue Mountain Joe" 9 x 15 cm. torn open at the left margin. Formulas for the treatment of various illnesses as well as poisons to eliminate bed bugs cockroaches and flies powders to treat horses and cattle and several "Indian" cures for hydrophobia asthma and charms to keep away disease.<br/>Dr. Blue Mountain Joe was considered an illegal "itinerant vendor" of medicines and nostrums by an Illinois Supreme Court ruling in 1889. The good "doctor" apparently had a traveling variety show with entertainers including musicians strongmen Native Americans "real or pretend" etc. He would give free evening shows "consisting of music singing jokes wire-walking and other performances" then use the venue to peddle his patent medicines to the gathered crowds. see: Twentieth Annual Report of the Illinois State Board of Health Springfield IL: 1898 Court Decisions pp. xcix-ci. Foxing along top edge of text block on most volumes but no foxing on page faces. Pages are bright and clean bindings are tight complete set with all foldouts and rear pocket maps present. Extra postage required. For mailing to a USA destination postage comes to a total of about $11 since the set weighs about 18 pounds. Contains head-and-shoulders portraits of eight young women in white nursing caps and uniforms arranged within a shield labeled "Great Falls Columbus Hospital 1919" with a white cross at the bottom. Image size is 10" x 8". Mounted in the original mat with the names of the eight women written boldly in pencil on the verso. Surnames are: Donat Youngren Hutcheson Oneal Lichter Allen Goodyear and Fromhart. Overall size is 13.5" x 11.25" Founded in 1892 by five Sisters of Providence nuns the hospital was named Columbus after the explorer. Those five nuns nursed more than 99 patients the first year made 43 home visits served 170 meals and wrote 475 prescriptions according to an article in the Great Falls Tribune. A nurses home was added to the hospital in 1903. By the time the young women in this 1919 photograph graduated the Wesley Van Orsdel Nurses Home had been built across the street. unknown
