5863MONTANA. ALS. 2 pg. 8 x 10. October 22 1869. Bozeman. An autograph letter signed W.S. Darby in Bozeman to Major Kinney Virginia City: We arrived all O.K. evenig sic before last and our mutual friend the Marshall sicat once took possession of the goods wares & merchdise sic ofDoughty & Wilcot. The latter have evidently been going in for a big thing and are much crestfallen at the customary proceedings. The stuck left is in very good condition but being all displayed in a very handsome store looks worse than it really is. I have been placed in possession of it and am now making an inventory under the order of the Court: If I can purchase very low I could make some money out of it. The writer is also clearly in some debt to the sendee as he discusses returning $200 at the bottom of the page and visiting him: I shall make time to go to Virginia for a few daysI fully spect I can get around to it in a week. However at this time he can only offer a check for $40 he crossed out $35. While little is known about either gentleman the fact that the letter is going from Bozeman Montana to Virginia City Nevada reveals the intertwined finances and societies of new post-war Western settlements as friends and business partners struggle to develop financial stability in their new situations. Condition is fair with fading and minor tears on the bottom of the page and professional repairs to the verso. unknown

35258Montana resident possibly an attorney. ALS 2pp separate leaves 8½" X 11" Harlem MT 1904 July 21. Addressed to "My dear James & Albert" Smith's brothers. Near fine. Handsomely penned in black ink in a large readable hand this letter largely concerns the claims on "poor Writ's property" for "some of his old time prospect loving friend got around me and did not want Writs mining claims sold that he had held onto for 20 years as they would go for little or nothing. So I paid out on them $500.00 & told the administrator not to sell them. They have to be represented again within a few months it will take between $300 & $400.00 dollars Will you help me represent them If you cannot or do not want to will you let me have your interests On account of your being in Canada & so far away If you will let me have your interests I will send you $25.00 apiece. Should I ever be luckly sic to get any thing out of them I will send you something more." Goes on to explain "the claims are so high up in the mountains and the snow comes there so early the claims must be represented early or else they will be lost. The claims that Writ had in Thunder Mountain have gone by default they were so far away I could do nothing about them." Of some town named Bellevue in Montana he notes "Bellevue is a gone down place very dull there." Invites his brothers to visit: "I'd like to have you both come out and see this country some time do not put it off too long it would be a fine trip for you." Interesting mine settlement content. unknown
189076887Mismarck D.Y.: Benton Transportation Comoany 1890. Original annual pass 3 7/8 x 2 1/2 inches bearing the company name and steel engraved vignettes of Bismarck the N.P Bridge and Fort Benton. Issued to Frank M. Baker and signed by the company superintendent Isaac P. Baker. Printed on the verso are the terms for the use of this pass. The verso has four very old spots that indicate this was once tipped into an album. A very clean and bright passThe Benton Transportation Company was one of the most successful steamship companies carrying goods and people the almost 600 miles from Bismarck D.T. to Fort Benton to Fort Benton. M.T. then the westernmost place navigable on the Missouri River. Goods from all over the populated East could ship their cargo to Bismarck by train and then have it delivered to still wild and wooly West made it a vital point of commerce from the 1860s to the 1880s. After the railroads foremost among them the Great Northern made transportation quicker and cheaper steamship transportation began to fade away. The fact that this pass was issued to Frank M. Baker. General Superintendent of the Addison & Pennsylvania Railway as late as 1891 does indicate that it was still active enough for Superintendents of other railroad companies to have cause to visit it. Frank Benton later became a New York State Railway Commissioner. Benton Transportation Comoany unknown

1877321671Montana Territory 1877. Pen-and-ink drawing on ruled paper cut out to size and captioned as above. Approx. 20-1/2 x 7 inches. Old folds. Matted. Pen-and-ink drawing on ruled paper cut out to size and captioned as above. Approx. 20-1/2 x 7 inches. From the first reports of the Yellowstone region such as Gen. Wm. E. Strong's A Trip to the Yellowstone National Park in July August and September 1875 the word began to spread: "There is probably no river in the world the equal of the Yellowstone for big trout." Though tourist parties began to travel to the Yellowstone it was still uncertain territory. In the late summer of 1877 it was the seat of war.
In early September 1877 Civil War veteran General Oliver O. Howard who a decade earlier had founded Howard University and served as its president was leading his troops on the trail of the Nez Perce who had just left the Yellowstone Park. Howard's forces more than 500 strong reached the northeast corner of the Park on Clark's Fork on 7 September. The Nez Perce under the leadership of Chief Joseph moved through incredibly rugged terrain and ultimately evaded both Howard and another military cohort under Col. Samuel D. Sturgis.
This contemporary record of a Yellowstone river trout was made on a large sheet of ruled ledger paper. The anonymous artist is believed to be Lieut. Cyrus A. Earnest of the 8th U.S. Infantry as the item was found among his papers with a cyanotype of Fort Bridger California where he was posted following his Yellowstone expedition service as well as several related printed documents of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion California Commandery. These items accompany the drawing.
Earnest 1840-1893 was a lieutenant in the Eighth Infantry and served with Custer in the 1873 Yellowstone Expedition to survey a route for the Northern Pacific Railroad along the Yellowstone River. While serving under Howard in the Nez Perce expedition Earnest received special commendation for a heroic 2-day over 100 mile ride over rough terrain to resupply the army at Baker's battlefield.
Ernest who was born in Ohio used the conventional name for the brook trout Salmo fontanalis but that describes a non-native eastern species. Yellowstone cutthroat trout or black spotted are the most widespread native trout with "highly variable coloration but generally yellow-brown or brassy/bronze" They were first described as a distinct species Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri by Jordan and Gilbert in 1883.
A remarkable artifact from the earliest years of the U.S. presence in the Yellowstone valley and a reminder that at the edges of battle people attend to customary tasks and pursuits: fishing and making a record of daily activities. Provenance: Cyrus A. Earnest 8th U.S. Infantry see below unknown

193676125Helena: Montana State Highway Commission 1936. First edition Octavo promotional pamphlet measuring 8 x 9 1/2 inches but folded in half and with text printed in columns. Photographically illustrated wrappers. Very good and clean no issues. OCLC only records three copies. The text extolling the grandeur of Montana was written by Bob Fletcher Plans Engineer for the State Highway Commission. His purpose was to increase tourism to the state. Along with the historical markers Fletcher wrote the department s promotional material including Headin for the Hills! 1937 and Picture Writing 1938 published the first of the state s colorful highway maps in 1934 and established! visitors centers at Montana s ports of entry. He knew his Montanans. The opening photograph of Tick Fall in Glacier National Park was taken by famed photographer T. J. Hileman and as Hileman specialized in portraits of Native Americans it is more then likely the he was responsible for the two panels bakd and front that bear photographic illustrations of Native Americans. On every page but three there are historical artistic vignettes by "Shoup." Irvin "Shorty" Shope was raised on a ranch in Montana and fell under the influence of the western painter Edgar S. Paxson while still in high school. Between 1919 and 1930 Shope worked as a cowboy on Montana ranches while studying art through a correspondence course. Beginning in 1925 he first exhibited his paintings in Montana and received some commercial assignments. Having sold his first painting at the age of thirty Shope returned to college majoring in art and history. In Helena Montana Shope began working as a commercial artist for the state government and at that time also spent a few months studying under the well-known illustrator Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central School of Art in New York. Shope's usual subjects were cowboys the Blackfoot Indians mountains and deserts and all his works have a distinctly western look. The eleven paintings he created for The Northwest Paper Company in 1959 and 1960 also have the look of the west about them often featuring the Mountie with Indians ranchers and cattle.
