A year later the Southern Pacific Railroad's main line was rerouted through Phoenix fueling a tourism boom and further increasing a local population that numbered fewer than 30000 at the beginning of the decade. This directory also includes an alphabetical street guide for Phoenix and day rates from long distance telephone service.<br/><br/>Tall octavo: 2 52 2 28 4 p. with numerous period advertisements including the Yellow Cabs taxi tabbed insert. Original printed paper wrappers which are bound with three staples and hole punched in the top left corner for the addition of a bookmark featuring advertising for Maricopa Butter on one side and the Pratt-Gilbert Company on the other. Typical mild toning to the contents. Short closed tear to the title page with some mild creasing to the top corner of the first three leaves. The tab of the Yellow Cabs insert is creased with some light fading along the extremities of the wrappers; else crisp clean and very good. Color die-cut booklet covers have gold and silver decorations enhancing the color art of the mystical 3-headed dragon the maiden and the United States flag. n. p. 48 pp. 3 pages of text and the other 45 pages are color watercolor drawings of the structurally impossible floats. Wikipedia says "The Festival of Mountain and Plain was an annual celebration of pioneer days in the Old West held in early October in Denver from 1895 to 1899 and in 1901 with a final attempt at revival in 1912. Organized by The Mountain and Plain Festival Association the event featured a parade and rodeo. It continued until at least 1902. It was a regional celebration and drew pioneers from throughout the West many of whom had participated in the events celebrated. William Byers founder of the Rocky Mountain News Colorado's first newspaper was one of its promoters and directors. He originated many of its features: the bal champedre outdoor ball a great public masquerade ball held on Broadway; and the four great parades: first a pageant of western history; second a masked parade; and on the third day "a military and social parade ending with a sham battle at City Park and in the evening the parade of the slaves of the silver serpent." Minimal wear to edges else a fine copy. Privately printed, 1898. unknown
