Subito dopo lui vinsero il Tour i vari Ku?bler, Koblet, Bobet finché il vero successore del Fausto, da lui stesso vaticinato, fu Jacques Anquetil, grande passista, fenomeno delle crono e del gossip. Erano campioni ma diventavano anche divi, ricoperti di soldi e attenzioni, sempre più personaggi mediatici e manager di loro stessi. E il ciclismo, anche il terribile Tour de France, cominciò ad adattarsi a loro, ad addolcirsi, a seguirne caratteristiche tecniche per blandire gli idoli e le loro folle. Ma fino a Gino Bartali, l'ultimo eroico, il Tour fu ben altro. Era stato pensato da Desgrange come una prova estrema, un'avventura perenne, un esercizio di sopravvivenza alle insidie della strada, della natura avversa, degli elementi, una corsa a eliminazione dove soltanto i più stoici avrebbero resistito, e in questo Bartali è stato il più forte di sempre. Questo fu il Tour de France fino a Bartali, una chanson de geste che faceva sognare, che concedeva occasioni formidabili di riscatto a gente di estrazione plebea, dalla scorza di cuoio, che emergeva talora da trincee di fango come lo erano certe strade di montagna degli anni Dieci, come lo rimaseroalmeno fino al Secondo dopoguerra. Quel ciclismo eroico stava nel cuore di intere generazioni di nonni e padri; lo hanno dichiarato estinto i soliti apprendisti stregoni che disegnano strategie di business per qualsiasi sport. Ma che il ciclismo sia ben vivo lo attestano sempre più persone; e che il più bello sia stato quello dei tempi eroici credo lo dimostrino anche le pagine e le foto di questo libro.
