193676125Helena: Montana State Highway Commission 1936. First edition Octavo promotional pamphlet measuring 8 x 9 1/2 inches but folded in half and with text printed in columns. Photographically illustrated wrappers. Very good and clean no issues. OCLC only records three copies. The text extolling the grandeur of Montana was written by Bob Fletcher Plans Engineer for the State Highway Commission. His purpose was to increase tourism to the state. Along with the historical markers Fletcher wrote the department s promotional material including Headin for the Hills! 1937 and Picture Writing 1938 published the first of the state s colorful highway maps in 1934 and established! visitors centers at Montana s ports of entry. He knew his Montanans. The opening photograph of Tick Fall in Glacier National Park was taken by famed photographer T. J. Hileman and as Hileman specialized in portraits of Native Americans it is more then likely the he was responsible for the two panels bakd and front that bear photographic illustrations of Native Americans. On every page but three there are historical artistic vignettes by "Shoup." Irvin "Shorty" Shope was raised on a ranch in Montana and fell under the influence of the western painter Edgar S. Paxson while still in high school. Between 1919 and 1930 Shope worked as a cowboy on Montana ranches while studying art through a correspondence course. Beginning in 1925 he first exhibited his paintings in Montana and received some commercial assignments. Having sold his first painting at the age of thirty Shope returned to college majoring in art and history. In Helena Montana Shope began working as a commercial artist for the state government and at that time also spent a few months studying under the well-known illustrator Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central School of Art in New York. Shope's usual subjects were cowboys the Blackfoot Indians mountains and deserts and all his works have a distinctly western look. The eleven paintings he created for The Northwest Paper Company in 1959 and 1960 also have the look of the west about them often featuring the Mountie with Indians ranchers and cattle. 201 pages of profoundly fascinating and delightful illustrated history. Author's father (b. 1870) left Yorkshire, England with his young family for Canada in 1909 and arrived in Fife Lake, Saskatchewan where they spent their first winter in a straw house. Author was born in a sod house in 1910 and moved with his family to Montana when he was 6 years old. At age 14 the family moved to Victoria, B.C. and from there to Nanoose Bay, further up Vancouver Island. Most pages contain brief text, accompanied by the author's simple sketches of the way things were. He has stressed the most practical elements of daily life and survival. A priceless compilation of the challenges and genius of the pioneer. Examples include: how to hunt prairie antelope by wearing a white sheet; avoiding flying ants by erecting a pole to your wagon and hanging a coat at its top; uprooting stumps by tying them to nearby trees to be felled; cutting wood by rigging a buzzsaw to the back wheel of a Model "T" Ford truck; and many, many more. Mentions Vancouver Island landmarks such as the Arlington Hotel, Lantzville Hotel, Quarterway Hotel, and more. This book lends itself wonderfully to teaching youngsters the ways of the not-so-distant past. You will have great difficulty in putting it down. Book
