Considerata oggi tra gli ottomila più facili, non lo era sicuramente quando Herbert Tichy, viaggiatore, geologo, fotografo e scrittore, decise di tentarne la prima salita nell'ottobre del 1954 con una spedizione per molti aspetti innovativa: leggera, con un uso limitato di corde fisse, senza ossigeno e organizzata nel periodo post monsonico. Il libro non racconta soltanto di come Tichy raggiunse la vetta nonostante un grave congelamento alle mani, ma è un vero e proprio viaggio nella terra del Nepal e nella cultura degli Sherpa.
