Het BOEK is rijk geïllustreerd en geeft in 440 pagina's vierkleurendruk een overzicht van de Belgische radioconstructeurs (een 100-tal) met hun productie aan radiotoestellen (meer dan duizend modellen) gedurende het interbellum. In de Eerste Wereldoorlog was er een kleine radiofabriek van het Belgisch leger in Calais. Vele Belgen deden hier ervaring op met de radiotechniek. Na de oorlog werd onder impuls van Robert Goldschmidt in 1919 S.I.F. in Frankrijk gesticht, en S.I.B. een jaar later in Belgie. Ook Ets M. de Wouters werd in datzelfde jaar opgericht. Onder het initiatief van koning Albert I werden onderhandelingen opgestart met de bankier Lambert en de Belgische haute finance, om S.B.R. op te richten, om alzo het dreigende monopolie door het Engelse bedrijf Marconi op de Belgische markt te doorbreken. S.B.R. zal in de jaren twintig de voornaamste Belgische producent worden. In deze jaren ontstaan er veel kleine Belgische bedrijven, die meestal maar enkele jaren radio?s produceren. Eind jaren twintig komt Philips, die daarvoor enkel onderdelen leverde, zoals radiolampen, op de Belgische markt. Vanaf 1934 produceert Philips radiotoestellen in Belgie, nl in de fabriek te Leuven. Hierdoor wordt Philips ook een belangrijke speler op de Belgische markt. Enkele Belgische bedrijven blijven standhouden door het produceren van grote aantallen, dankzij de mechanisatie. Daarnaast speelde de innovatie en de fraaie vormgeving, aangepast aan de Belgische smaak een belangrijke rol. Vele ontwerpen kregen een Art Deco look. Ook kleine Belgische bedrijven konden bloeien dankzij de lokale productie en verkoop onder de kerktoren door mond aan mond reclame. Hierdoor schakelden zij reclamekosten en distributiekosten van de tussenhandelaars uit. De Belgische constructeurs ondervonden hevige concurrentie van buitenlandse bedrijven, zoals Telefunken, Blaupunkt, Radiola, Marconi, enz. Hierdoor moesten ze steeds hernieuwen in vormgeving en techniek, wat geleid heeft tot de fraaie Belgische radiotoestellen. Het boek kwam tot stand dankzij de medewerking van verzamelaars, radioverenigingen en musea. De belangrijkste informatie over de radioleveranciers en hun toestellen vond ik in de vele documenten van mijn eigen archief, dat ik gedurende veertig jaar heb opgebouwd.
