1921665761921. Fine. 1921 25 x 32.30 cm une feuille Extremely rare and humoristic menu pamphlet from the souper démocratique democratic supper organised by the République de Montmartre newly founded in 1921. The date shown is a parody of the republican calendar: ""17 Neigeôse An I"". A magnificent original wood engraving representing the Communards on the Montmartre hill and bearing the monogram Armand adorns the first board. In the spirit of the Paris Commune the République de Montmartre was created in the early 1920s by the Parisian artists Joé Bridge Adolphe Willette Jean-Louis Forain Francisque Poulbot Maurice Neumont Louis Morin Maurice Millière Raoul Guérin and Jules Depaquit. Their parties and banquets often organised in Montmartre's legendary venues Moulin de la Galette cirque Médrano Moulin Rouge were intended to unite the Montmartre community by mutual aid and sociability. This menu is a rare testimony of the beginnings of this joyful and festive organisation which is delivering here a very comical banquet where one serves Fois d'aristocrates truffés de chez Julien Julian's truffled aristocrat livers Salade d'Emigrés Salad of Expatriates and Fruits de la Révolution Fruits of the Revolution. It ends with the motto SALUT FRATERNITE et BON APPETIT ! CHEERS FRATERNITY and BON APPETIT! unknown
1938233971938. Natural DisastersEngineering Niagara Falls bridge collapse photo archive documenting the failure of the Honeymoon Bridge during the catastrophic ice jam of January 1938 one of the most dramatic engineering failures in the history of the Niagara frontier. Built in 1898 as the Upper Steel Arch Bridge and renamed the Honeymoon Bridge in 1937 the structure connected Niagara Falls New York and Niagara Falls Ontario carrying tourists automobiles and cross-border traffic directly beside the falls. During the severe winter of 1938 massive accumulations of ice in the Niagara River created extraordinary pressure against the bridge's steel arch and supports. On January 27 1938 after days of strain and closure to traffic the bridge collapsed into the frozen river below. The destruction ended forty years of continuous operation at one of the most heavily visited tourist and transportation corridors in North America and directly led to construction of the Rainbow Bridge completed in 1941. The archive captures both the frozen landscape that preceded the disaster and the immediate aftermath including crowds gathered along the edge of the falls observing the twisted remains of the bridge lodged in the ice.

Photo archive of 13 black and white silver gelatin photographs approximately 3"x5" to 3 x 4.5 inches Niagara Falls New York and Ontario circa January-February 1938. Images show the Horseshoe Falls and American Falls almost entirely surrounded by ice formations with enormous frozen shelves extending across the river basin and dense accumulations of icicles hanging from the cliff faces beside pedestrian overlooks. Several scenes show groups of bundled spectators standing near railings at the edge of the falls while the collapsed steel arch of the Honeymoon Bridge lies broken and partially submerged downstream. Two photographs focus closely on the twisted central truss section bent sharply downward into the ice-choked river while another wider view shows the destroyed span framed directly beside the falls emphasizing the scale of the collapse relative to the landscape. Additional views depict the intact approach structures before failure heavy ice movement beneath the bridge and broad panoramas of the frozen gorge crowded with drifting ice masses. Four photos unmarked appear to show the icy conditions preceding the collapse while the remaining nine stamped "Feb 10 1938" show the aftermath of the disaster.

The collapse exposed the fatal weakness of the Honeymoon Bridge's low placement in the gorge where winter ice could press directly against its abutments. Authorities closed the bridge before the final collapse and workers escaped before the steel arch failed resulting in a dramatic but ultimately non-deadly engineering failure. The Rainbow Bridge opened in 1941 about 500 feet from the old site with higher clearance and a design better suited to ice and flood pressure. The event permanently altered the architectural and transportation structure of Niagara Falls with projects designed around ice floes as a primary structural threat not a seasonal inconvenience. Light curling consistent with age and handling; images remain clear and well preserved overall. Overall in very good condition. unknown

Very good/ very good A tantalising as yet! unsupported association copy of the attractive limited edition George Bourne's familial farming memoir illustrated with six sympathetic woodcuts by Stephen Bone with an inscription ascribed to fellow woodcut artist author and suffragette Clemence Housman supposedly gifting it to the prolific and prolifically censored Irish novelist Norah Hoult: "To Norah from C. H. Christmas 1923"; according to a PO note "Alan Hancox the Cheltenham-based antiquarian bookseller who sold this to me says the inscription on the endpaper is by Clemence Housman. to Norah Hoult". Credibly in Housman's hand in 1923 the year of inscription the retiring artist and author would have been 62 and living briefly in Hampshire with her brother Laurence en route to their final home in Street from London; while her own novels and work for the Suffrage Atelier was behind her Housman was still producing wood engraving of her brother's drawings to illustrate his books with 1922 seeing Jonathan Cape issue three volumes of fairy stories and Christian fantasies on which the siblings collaborated. The significantly younger Hoult 1898–1984 had recently moved to London and was writing for a range of publications including Time and Tide the Telegraph and Pearson's Magazine; her first book Poor Women wouldn't appear for another five years. It's possible that Housman and Hoult may have met through literary circles and it seems likely that they would have been sympathetic to each other. Hoult would go on to nurture a close cross-generational friendship with her neighbour in wartime Kensington the novelist and suffragist Violet Hunt on whom she based her protagonist Claire in her 1944 novel of memory loss There Were No Windows. Alex. Bridge was a Tragara Press collector and correspondent of its founder Alan Anderson. With thanks to Elizabeth Crawford. Jonathan Cape paperback
