In addition to a description and history of Natural Bridge this comprises excerpts from other works about the bridge including a few pages from Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia. Additionally information on accommodations and transportation to the site. Quite rare with only 5 institutions reporting ownership of any edition according to OCLC. Original boards: front board detached but present rear board partially detached lacking back strip but text block and binding are firm fully intact; both boards show typical spotting and rubbed edges but no major defects. vii128 pp. illus. w/ line drawings diagrams. Interior is foxed ranging light to moderate. The bottom fore-edge corner of the final 30 pp. or so shows some discoloration progressing toward rear with some paper loss corner only not affecting text to several last leaves discoloration also on rear pastedown. From the Second London Edition with additions and alterations by the American Editor. This "American Editor" named in the publisher's advertisement of which he was author was F. A. P. 185023992New York 1850. Very good overall. An interesting letter detailing the negotiation over wooden vs. iron railroad bridges. In this letter addressed to Strong M. M. White agent of the New York Iron Bridge Co. seeking to persuade the Vermont railroad to eschew a wooden bridge and setting out advantageous terms for purchasing an iron bridge.<br /> <br /> Strong was "liable as endorser on paper for the Rutland and Washington Railroad Company which subsequently failed to an amount considerable exceeding all his property." He was sued in the Supreme Court of Vermont lter in the 1850s and looks to have been bankrupted losing his real estate marble quarry share etc. See "Reports of Cases Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of Vermont vol. 42 Montpelier Vt 1870 by Wheelock Veazey a Vermont Civil War hero.<br /> <br /> Letter written on blue laid paper 4pp 8 x 10 1/4"written on 1pp docketed on the verso with period folds. A small raised oval in the top left corner unreadable by this cataloguer. Verso a little marked a little creased. unknown

Invitation engraved on cream-colored card 9 x 6-1/2 in.; ticket is 6-1/2 x 2-3/4 in. Original invitation issued to Edwin C. Gibson with his name added in ink by a calligrapher. The invitation card includes a fine image of the span then known as the "New York and Brooklyn Bridge" flanked by two crests representing the two cities. The ticket has a small embossed emblem with the initials "NY & BB" within a leaf. Both items were engraved by Tiffany & Co. with their mark at the lower edge of each.
