Scarce extract from Sinistrari's larger work "De Delictis et Poenis" 1654 text entirely in Latin save for the publisher's tongue-in-cheek introduction in French. Liseux gained some notoriety a few years earlier when he published "De Daemonialitate et Incubus et Succubis" claiming to have discovered this heretofore unknown manuscript written in 1680 by the Franciscan priest Ludovico Maria Sinistrari 1622-1701. The work described the qualities of such beasts as vampires succubi and incubi though it has since been proposed that Liseux himself wrote the piece see J. Gordon Melton "The Vampire Book" 2010 p. 380. "De Daemonialitate" was eventually translated into English in 1879 and found its way into the hands of W.B. Yeats who borrowed Ezra Pound's copy and from it was inspired to compose the poem "The Black Centaur" first published in "The Tower" in 1928 Catherine E. Paul and Warwick Gould "W.B. Yeats and the Problem of Belief" "Yeats Annual" no. 21 p. 313. <br/><br/>The present work is indeed authored by Sinistrari and remains here in its unalter ed Latin form presumably to avoid censure Liseux noting in his introduction that there's a reason he decided to publish this work sans illustration. Though the publisher's advertisement on the final leaf of text and rear cover only mention "De Daemonialitate" Liseux's catalog would go on to include the Kama Sutra and Ernest Dowson's "White Stains: Containing Also the Contemporary and Most Exhaustive Love's Cyclopaedia with Five Illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley in His Most Erotic Vein. Giacomo Lauro was a printmaker active in the map and view industry of mid-sixteenth to mid-seventeenth century Rome. The Temple was built in 500BC on the site of an even older shrine dedicated to Saturn. It was reconstructed in 42BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus a Roman Consul who was an officer in Julius Caesars army during the conquest of Gaul. He installed the Treasury of the Roman Republic here where it remained until 28BC. It was destroyed by fire in 283AD but later rebuilt. All that remains today are eight columns and a part of the pediment which bears a Latin inscription. In English it reads: The Senate and the people of Rome restored what fire consumed. Saturn who was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Kronos was the god of agriculture and the harvest or of life and death. Like Kronos he was represented as a hooded figure bearing a scythe. Because he was afraid of being overthrown he ate his all his children apart from Jupiter Neptune and Pluto whom for some reason he could not swallow. In time his fears became reality; he was overthrown by Jupiter who became the king of the Roman gods. unknown books

Poems honoring socialist leader Eugene Debs by a variety of radical 20th century poets including Witter Bynner Max Eastman Charlotte Perkins Gilman Carl Sandburg Siegfried Sassoon Horace Traubel and Israel Zangwill many others. Sinclair contributed the foreword along with letters from H.G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw who states: "Clearly the White House is the only safe place for an honest man like Debs". A key association copy inscribed to Palmer who served as Attorney General under Woodrow Wilson from 1919-1921. As a reaction to domestic unrest Palmer created the General Intelligence Unit in 1919 recruiting J. Edgar Hoover to lead the new organization. During the First Red Scare 1919-1920 the "Palmer Raids" were launched which resulted in numerous suspected radicals to be rounded up and deported. During the final weeks of Wilson's time in office Palmer requested a Presidential pardon for an aging Debs whose health was deteriorating in prison; Wilson's response was "Never! An interesting pair of copies inscribed to Gardner 1884-1968 acclaimed stage actress and the first actress to form her own production company. <br/><br/>Moved by his circumstances and deeply influenced by his speeches she visited him in prison in 1920 bringing him an autographed photo and beginning a correspondence that would last through the mid-1920's. In a December 21 1920 letter she writes: "Let me tell you that I was surprised to find my emotional self somewhat unaffected while I listened to you talk. I know the reason now. It is the same with you as it was with Epictetus prison walls cannot confine the spirit -- the mind is ever free. So in a way I did not feel your plight as keenly as I would that of another who had little vision little intelligence little understanding about his body being so small a part of the real him that his confinement was of the physical order only." Satirical stage drama based on Sinclair's 1933 pamphlet "The Way Out." Produced as a fund-raiser during Sinclair's EPIC campaign but probably never staged since. Unlike most other Sinclair works from this period there was no simultaneous issue from a trade publisher. Edward Anthony and his brother Henry operated the largest photographic supply company in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Edward operated a small photography practice before converting his business to a supply house. Henry came on board in 1852. The brothers operated successful business for the decades following until Edward's death in 1888. This trade catalog published the same year as Edward's death provides an overview of the photographic technologies of the day with all aspects of the process represented including photographer's props. The Anthony firm published a series of instructional books on photography and acted as distributors for British periodicals. <br /> <br /> A scarce catalog with eight copies held the varying cover title and title listed on the title page have led to multiple entries.
