DuBois and attracted prominent figures such as Alice Walker James Baldwin and Charles White as contributors. In print for almost 20 years this magazine was especially notable for not only covering a wide range of progressive issues centered around the civil rights struggle in the United States but also covering issues affecting Black people all over the world. <br/><br/>One notable trait of this magazine was the coverage of international issues in addition to movements in the US. The Summer 1964 issue focuses on "The People of the Caribbean Area" with 19 essays on Afro-Caribbean identity and the lingering effects of colonialism and slavery in the islands as well as entries from Caribbean poets Ernest Carr George W. Lamming and Derek Walcott. This issue is not unique though as other issues also deal with issues happening in Nigeria and a contribution from the publication's founded W.E.B. DuBois on "The African Roots of War."<br/><br/>The magazines also featured and promoted contemporary African-American art and literature giving an important platform for academics and intellectuals to critically engage with this creative output. The Summer 1969 issue features an oft-cited article one of the co-founders of the Black Arts Movement Amiri Baraka a.k.a. LeRoi Jones "LeRoi Jones and the New Black Writers of the Sixties"; this article analyses the shift in tone and theme for the writer over the course of the decade as his own political identity radicalized as he became involved with the Nation of Islam. Roman Zavadovych 1903 - 1985 writing under the pseudonyms Roman zi Slavnoi Fortissimo R. Rolianyk and M. Mamorsky was a writer poet and arguably one of the best known Ukrainian emigre children's authors. His literary career began in the 1920s with contributions of fairy tales poems and youth plays to various magazines. After spending time in a DP camp in Germany Zavadovych emigrated to the US and settled in Chicago. He co-founded the Association for Ukrainian Writers for Children and Youth OPDL together with Iurii Tyshchenko worked as a co-editor of "Veselka" magazine and wrote altogether during his life over 30 children's books many of which would be reprinted and issued in several editions. The illustrator Iurii Kozak 1933 - 2000 was a Ukrainian artist graphic designer sculptor and an undisputed master in church mosaics stained glass and frescoes. An odd piece of North Carolina mendicant literature published by ".an old disabled Confederate Veteran" who implores his reader: ".never loan this book to any one. I will keep these Books in stock. Tell them to confine four dimes between two Postal Cards or forty cents in Stamps.and this Book will be forthcoming. A premium with every Book." <br/><br/>First title is a reprint of Braxton Craven's account of the celebrated murder of Naomi Wise which first appeared in 1853 and was reprinted frequently throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Craven's narrative became the standard version of this lovers' quarrel ending in death entering into folklore through several different ballads including variations of the one penned by Craven himself which forms the postscript to his narrative though the most famous version made popular by North Carolina folk artist Doc Watson and others differs considerably from that printed here. <br/><br/>The second title a brief celebration of the career of Andrew Jackson emphasizing his North Carolina roots is claimed by Brittain to be of his own composition though it is clearly a cobbled-together account from newspapers and history books. <br/><br/>This pamphlet of uncertain date; Brittain dates Craven's narrative to "75 years ago" which would suggest a 1920s date for this pamphlet however typographically and stylistically it belongs to a much earlier era. Fletcher was the Scottish-born minister of the United presbyterian Church who In April 1824 was prosecuted in the civil and ecclesiastical courts for breach of promise to marry Miss Eliza Dick. According to the DNB "In the king's bench no verdict was given but in the meeting of the United Associate Synod at Edinburgh he was suspended from the exercise of his office and from church fellowship. The trial and suspension provoked a spate of publications ."<br/><br/>One of those publications was this very amusing satire of the trail of the Reverend before a "Court of Common Sense" with a 'special jury" consisting of a dozen illustrious Scots including Sir Walter Scott who was elected Foreman; Sir James Mackintosh; J. W. Croker; Thomas Campbell; Thomas Moore Samuel Rogers; John Galt; and William Blackwood. Much of the fun consists of the conversations between the members of the jury wehn called upon to examin a witness. The Jury's final verdict after a deliberation of 5 minuttes is delivered by the forman Sir Walter Scott: "My Lord we unanimously find the defendant Guilty upon the whole counts of the indictment.
