19153528Philadelphia 1915. Collection of a total of 285 manuscript and typescript pages of prose poetry and dramatic material written and edited by suffragist Sarah Dickson Lowrie 1870-1957. Lowrie a columnist and editor at the Philadelphia Public Ledger was also an activist. Founder of the Philadelphia Women's Committee later Chairperson of the Philadelphia League of Women Voters she used her public platform to promote equality for women and the working poor. An exceptional collection of material capturing the range of Lowrie's work as an author and editor including three genres across a period of at least 15 years. <br /> <br /> Included are:<br /> <br /> Autograph Manuscript including 5 published and unpublished works 202 pages dated 1900-1903<br /> Bound in half sheep over pebbled cloth measuring 7 x 8 inches and dated 1900-1903. The gift inscription in Lowrie's hand on the front endpaper "Mabel Norris Stewart April 1900" suggests that the notebook was a gift from her sister a major supporter of Sarah's career. Indeed the bulk of the manuscript documents Lowrie's composition and heavy revision of her story David the Hero from May 1900-August 1902 pages 1-35 59-175 with headings and notes for each section regarding dates of completion. The final entry states: "Finished these tales August 26 1902 - and dedicated them to Mary Mabel Norris Stewart with all my heart. Published Easter 1903." <br /> <br /> Interspersed within the notebook are other pieces of work by Lowrie. which appear to be unpublished. St. John of the Wilderness pages 35-56 is dated January-February 1901. The poem Away from You pages 57-58 is dated February 25 1901 and is accompanied by an original sketch. A story Peter the Fisherman pages 176-194 is dated August 25 1903. And the final piece dated November 25 1903 is on the death of her father pages 195-202 and appears to include a family history as well as a tribute to the man. Tucked loosely within the volume is a letter to Sarah from another female author identified only as J.S.C. regarding a short story. Also loosely inserted is a 1 page Autograph Poem unsigned in Lowrie's hand with content that ties together authorship and sex: ".Take my ovary Let me go Unapproached by further woe; But if you want What matters next Take o take my Appendix." Together the group shows her writing process and her ability to work on multiple projects during a highly creative period. Further research could link together the works based on religious themes Lowrie's work in activism and journalism and her own family's history.<br /> <br /> Autograph Playscript Signed for Me-Too 16 pages dated 1915<br /> Unbound but with a contemporary straight pin holding the upper left corner. Written fully in pencil with Lowrie's notation that the play was "written on July 19th & played on August 26 1915." What appears to largely be a fair copy of the two-act play the manuscript does contain checklists and notes on the first page regarding materials and equipment needed for staging. The final page is detached and incomplete but similarly contains scratch notes for the performance. <br /> <br /> Typed Manuscript Unsigned and hand annotated for The Idol 52 pages undated<br /> Unbound with loose pages measuring 8.5 x 11 inches. A short story -- possibly authored by Lowrie but definitely edited and annotated in her hand. Here the attention to detail and hands-on approach Lowrie takes are apparent. Meticulously corrected in type and in pencil with extensive portions excised or changed the typescript has also been cut apart and pasted back together throughout. The result is mispagination and the creation of a very new version of the original story.<br /> <br /> Autograph Poem Unsigned 4 pages undated<br /> Tied with blue string at the header. Pages measuring 6.75 x 10.25 inches and cut unevenly. A largely fair copy with one correction to the final line. Lowrie here tackles the themes of war violence and pacifism asserting women's place within them. "If I had been a pacifist 2000 years ago I grant you I'd have been unique and ready for a show. For in those old bloody days men really did in truth Demand an eye for a lost eye and for a tooth a tooth.One thousand years ago indeed the world had changed in part; Men's fights were then adjusted - sometimes - by words in court.Now I've been watching how things change And how the old's reversed; I always like to look ahead instead of last be first." References to war and technology including cars suggest that the present poem post-dates WWI.<br /> <br /> Typed Playscript Unsigned for The Flower Garden 8 pages undated<br /> Unbound but with two contemporary straightpins at the upper right corner. On legal paper measuring 8.5 x 12 inches. Annotated throughout in pencil with stage directions casting notes and revised lines. A play in one act it does appear that the play was performed and the present manuscript was used in its unfolding. The rear page is annotated heavily with the names of various players almost all women. Further research could definitely be conducted on those names and on the potential performance.<br /> <br /> <br /> Research opportunities abound for scholars including but not limited to American community theater performances the history of publication in women's magazines the connection between literature and women's activism themes in a pacifist suffragist's writing methods of composition and annotation and the work of Sarah Lowrie herself. unknown

Contemporary French mottled calf gilt floral panels separate black morocco labeling covers with border line tooling marbling on text block edging. Collation: Géometrie &2- 193 pp. 60 blank leaves; Algèbra & 2 -166 pp. 46 blank leaves; Planches & 2pp. 182 figures on 76 plates 48 blank leaves. All plates are on stiff blue laid paper. This course was taken by noted French economist Arthémond de Régny 1777-1841 probably during his university training in the latter part of the 18 century. Each volume has been prepared well with very legible and precise script and geometric figures. The organization of the Geometry volume starts with Euclid with numerical reference to geometric drawings in the Plate volume. A number of Problems Solutions and Corollaries are next. The remainder of this volume deals with 50 theorems for plane and sold geometry. Each theorem is stated first followed by demonstration then corollaries with further demonstration construction remark and ends with one or more problems along with solutions and reference where appropriate to figures in Plate volume. The volume on Algebra starts with basic addition subtraction multiplication and division. Next is a discussion of algebraic fractions their reduction with same denominator multiplication division and equations. Numerous examples of equations and computations occupy the remainder of the manuscript. Included are problems for solving equations with one two or three unknowns occasionally presenting a solution with a second method. The end of the manuscript has problems for 2 unknowns of znd degree division of irrationals and extracting the square root of a binomial. <br/><br/>Provenance: Arthémond de Régny bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Régny was a noted French economist who was invited around 1830 by Greek leader Capodistrias to assist Greece with their economic problems. Although Capodistrias was assassinated before he arrived Régny stayed in Greece during the period of Regency 1833-1835. He went on to found and assist in organizing the State Audit Council according to French ideals and became its first chairman. He also assisted in the Foundation of the National Bank of Greece in 1841. Arthémond de Régny got married in 1798 to the Genoese woman Catherine Castellini who was the daughter of Balthasar and granddaughter of Domenico Castellini who conquered the Algerians in 1763. Balthasar Castellini was consul to Naples and subsequently in Cartagena Spain Marseille and Genoa. He was in charge of important missions by the royal court of Naples and also held an outstanding position in the trade. The family Régny was originally from the province of Dombes. Still overall very good. 19 x 13.5cm. These three volumes are a collection of manuscripts written in the late Edo period probably the 1860s. Most of the original documents on which the manuscripts were based were written shortly after the arrival of the American delegation led by Commodore Matthew Perry in July 8 1853 June 3 in Japanese calendar. These documents written in the face of this national crisis were mostly driven by the patriotic fervour of the authors. They show a variety of thoughts about the threat from the foreign powers. None of these were published at the time and only Watanabe Kazan’s Shinki-ron was published in modern times. <br> <br>Kazan wrote his treatise inspired not by the arrival of Perry but by the Edo government’s hostile treatment of the American merchant ship Morrison in 1837. <br> <br>Titles and short synopses of these works follow: <br> <br>Volume 1: Chiyoda mondō Questions and Answers in Chiyoda 千代田問答 1853; Momijiyama shinrei-ki紅葉山神靈記 Message from the Holy Spirit in Momijiyama <br> <br>The author of Chiyoda mondō is unknown. The word "Chiyoda" in Chiyoda mondō is the name of the area where the Edo Castle sat and refers to the god in the Tōshōgū Shrine in Momijiyama next to the western part of the Edo Castle. This document is difficult to read but it appears to explain how a group of mysterious people or possibly divine spirits tell stories related to Japan's national affairs in 1853 discussing the country's national defence against foreigners and the situation regarding Christianity. <br> <br>In Momijiyama shinrei-ki the anonymous author who was an attendant to the group of the high government officials visiting the Tōshōgū Shrine in Momijiyama fell asleep and in his dream a Holy Spirit appeared and told him the necessity of enhancing the coastal defence in the face of the American expansion. <br> <br>Volume 2: Daimyō shoka kengi 大名諸家建議 Proposals from War Lords and Various People <br> <br>This manuscript is a collection of proposals and opinions expressed by Daimyō war lords and the retainers of the Edo government on the subject of Japan's foreign policy after the arrival of the American delegation led by Commodore Perry which requested trade with Japan. The Daimyō discuss how to deal with the crisis in terms of such issues as trade and coastal defence. Some even proposed possible war with the American fleet. The daimyo some of whom were high-rank officials of the Edo government included Shimadu Nariakira島津斉彬 1809-58 Maeda Nariyasu 前田斉泰 1811-84 Matsudaira Shungaku 松平春嶽 1928-90 Tokugawa Yoshinobu 徳川慶喜 1837-1913 Ii Naosuke 井伊直弼 1815-60 Nabeshima Naomasa 鍋島直正 1815-71 and the retainers included Inoue Saburōemon 井上三郎右衛門 - and Katsu Rinsuke 勝麟助 1823-99. Rifujutsui discusses such topics as the advance of the Russians to Siberia and the necessity of developing Hokkaido as well as the art of war. <br> <br>Watanabe Kazan was a chief retainer of the Tahara Domain eastern part of present Aichi Prefecture Confucian scholar and also famous as a painter. Shinki-ron criticises the xenophobic foreign policy of the Edo government. <br> <br>Hakura Morochika was a Confucian scholar in Osaka. After the arrival of Perry he discussed the measures against foreign enemies. In Gakaisho a collection of historical essays Hakura objected to trade with America in the form of an answer to the sovereign message from America seeking trade with Japan. He also wrote an answer to the sovereign message from Russia but he was more sympathetic to the Russians because they sought trade through the official channel in Nagasaki while the American delegate in the military fleet came to Uraga in a threatening manner. In Gasuisho also Hakura mentions the harmful effects of Christianity. <br> <br>Fujimori Kōan was a Confucian scholar of the Ono Domain in present Ono City Hyogo Prefecture. In his later life he opened a private school in Edo and wrote the comprehensive treatise on Japanese coastal defence Kaibō biron after the arrival of Perry. . unknown

It is a very attractive and well-preserved facsimile of the fine work produced by Sangorski & Sutcliffe when the firm was at the top of their game. After studying under and then working for Douglas Cockerell Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe founded their own bindery in 1901 and continued in a successful partnership until 1912. During that year the firm suffered three major blows: their famously splendid jewelled binding dubbed the "Great Omar" was lost on the Titanic; a few weeks after this accident Francis himself drowned; and Francis' brother Alberto who had been a central figure in producing the firm's vellum illuminated manuscripts went over to Riviere. Despite these losses the firm grew and prospered employing a staff of 80 by the mid-1920s and becoming perhaps the most successful English bindery of the 20th century. Though he was best known for his watercolor scenes of rural and winter landscapes Scottish artist Ewan Geddes 1866-1935 abandons his usual restrained palette in this collaboration with Sangorski & Sutcliffe employing instead a colorful array of paints that capture the warmth and sensuous lyricism of the text. Alphonse Mingana was raised in Chaldean Catholic in Northern Iraq. After attending seminary in Mosul he was ordained a priest in 1902. He worked in various capacities in the Middle East Including as a professor of Syriac studies at his seminary. Due to a theciogical quarrel Mingana left the priesthood and the area in 1910. He soon connected with Woodbrooke a Quaker study center in Birmingham. England. It was founded by George Cadbury in 1903 no husband of Elizabeth Cadbury who also appears in this list. There he taught Semitic languages. He had long had a passion for early Christian and Muslim manuscripts. Cadbury recognizing his linguistic skills and expertise with early manuscripts sent him on three buying trips to the Middle East. There Mingana collect thousands of important Middle Eastern manuscripts including one of the oldest fragments of the Quran ever discovered. He also worked on cataloging them and transiating the most important ones into English. They became the seven volumes offered here. His collection of manuscripts now called the Mingana Collection consists of over 3000 Middle Eastern manuscripis in over twenty languages including Arabic Syriac Ethiopic Georgian Hebrew Samaritan and Armenian It is currently housed at the University of Birmingham The manuscripts in the collection have proven to be a treasure trove for scholars of early Christianity. Striking facsimile edition of the sumptuous Romanesque Codex of Vysehrad commissioned as one of four manuscripts produced by the same artists between 1080 and 1085 around the time of the coronation of Vratislav II 1061-1092 first king of Bohemia and includes the lection for the king’s coronation. They all probably originated in the scriptorium at the Monastery of St. Emmeram and this manuscript was declared a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic. The extensive cycle of images carefully rendered and detailed draw from the Regensburg School and Ottonian influences with a Christ’s genealogy on four divided pages. Within the 108 folios there are 26 pages depicting the gospels four of the Old Testament and 29 scenes from the life of Christ with large decorated illuminated initials. Originally the property of the Church of Vysehrad many scholars believe it was originally prepared for St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle and Vratislav II had secured his title after negotiations with Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV at the time in conflict with Pope Gregory VII as he continued insisting on the retaining the Slavonic liturgy and wanted to appoint his own bishops. Corners repaired with later black buckram; boards scuffed spine chipped. Hinges cracked repaired with later cloth and renewed endpapers. Minor scattered foxing and toning to text. Accomplished in a neat highly legible hand. A very attractive manuscript translation into Spanish of Pierre Larousse's well-known work on eminent and historical personages Fleurs Historiques des Dames et des Gens du Monde in a contemporary Cuban gilt goatskin binding. The manuscript connects three figures in the upper social echelons of Cuban society. José Fernandez Pellon the scribe of this volume is recorded as the Grand Master of Cuba's freemasons lodge the Gran Logia Unida de Colón y la Isla de Cuba. The translator Aurelio Almeida helped to found the organization in 1875 and at this time served as the Lodge Secretary. The initials E.D. gilt at the foot of the spine and the dedicatory inscription "A Eugenia Desvernine" refer to Eugenia Desvernine y Galdós b. 1865 daughter of the famous Cuban pianist Pablo Desvernine and Carolina Galdós y Echániz. She was also the niece of Benito Pérez Galdós the Spanish realist novelist who some authorities consider only second in stature to Cervantes. A contemporary social register remarks that Eugenia was one of the most beautiful women in Cuba perhaps an inspiration for the painstaking production of this manuscript.<br /> <br /> The original work by Larousse was a loose collection of religious parables classical myths biographies of ancient and modern historical figures. The title of the manuscript advises that is an extract and in the brief introduction Almeida explains his selection process writing that "He suprimido algunos artículos sobre cosas muy sabidas de la historia sagrada; y otros sobre la de Francia que mencionan frases ó personas casi ninca citadas ó citades solamente por las escritores francesas." He also notes several alterations and additions more relevant to Spanish history saying "En Cambio he agregado algunos artículos sobre historia de España que no están en el original y he tomado unos pocos de otra obra del mismo Mr. Larousse y de libros diversos." The result is an original amalgam of biographies historical episodes and religious parables. Interestingly we find no recorded printed editions of Larousse's work in Spanish so that the present manuscript is also an entirely original work of translation. A fascinating product of the cultural interests and mores of Cuban high society near the end of the Spanish colonial period. unknown

Poole praises: ".the four stately volumes in large quarto now before us. No catalogue of any great library has ever been attempted on such a scale and certainly none can rival it in the completeness of its scholarship or the perfection of its work in detail. .The technical finish of the book is incomparable and the printers have co-operated in making it a splendid production. It is printed with wonderful accuracy in a noble type; the paper is excellent and the volumes are uncommonly easy to use. The catalogue of the Royal manuscripts occupies the first two volumes. The third contains a description of the King's manuscripts ; this collection inconveniently named forms part of the fine library of George III which was presented to the nation by George IV. That library is famous for its printed books but the 446 manuscripts in it comprise few of remarkable interest. Most of the volume is taken up by two indexes which call for special admiration. The general index is drawn up with extraordinary completeness. .The second index is of initia or incipits in various languages. The compilers say that ' the Royal collection includes so much of the common stock of a medieval library that the Latin index will it is hoped be found useful by many who may wish to identify unnamed treatises'. This is too modest an aspiration : the index covers so much longer a range of centuries than those of Vattasso and Little that it must at once rank as an indispensable work of reference for students of manuscripts. The fourth volume consists of a series of 125 plates giving beautifully reproduced facsimiles from 144 manuscripts of which two-thirds were written or probably written in England.The volume is an important contribution to palaeography.". From the introduction to the work: "The volume of plates fortunately prepared before the war forms a special feature of the Catalogue which it is hoped will be welcome both to palaeographers and to students of art. The 125 plates include representations of 99 manuscripts written or probably written in England and since nearly 50 of these are illuminated they serve to give a good idea of English mediaeval art the great merits of which are often ignored. French art which alone can rival it is well though not fully represented by 26 plates of which 24 are illuminated : Flemish and Italian work are less adequately represented. Four plates are devoted to handwritings of the 16th and 17th centuries and two to examples of the autographs of well-known scholars. A chronological table enables the student to follow the course of palaeographical and artistic development. A set formerly owned by C H St John Hornby founder of the Ashendene Press and noted collector of manuscripts with his red and black bookplate on the front pastedown endpapers. Some pencil notes to margins. Some mild rubbing to the cloth and the plate volume is a little shaken offsetting to endpapers otherwise a Very Good set with an excellent provenance. The text leaf provides a name and description of each component of the Vickers machine gun with numbers corresponding to the finely detailed diagrams which follow. The Vickers gun was originally produced for the British Army and required a 6- to 8-person team to operate. It was in service from the First World War through the 1960s. France ordered 2000 Vickers guns in 1914 with another 12125 issued to the U. S. Army in France.
