Faux vellum paper boards gilt lettering on spine; 2nd - 13.5 x 17 in. 222 pp of colour photo facsimile reproducing the entire manuscript. Quarter-vellum over embroidered Bohemian folk pattern cloth covers w/ original mylar protective cover ever-so-slight fraying in a couple fore-edges still NF/NF set preserved in original clamshell slipcase gilt lettering on spine hinges starting at foot of spine. Striking facsimile edition of the sumptuous Romanesque Codex of Vysehrad commissioned as one of four manuscripts produced by the same artists between 1080 and 1085 around the time of the coronation of Vratislav II 1061-1092 first king of Bohemia and includes the lection for the king’s coronation. They all probably originated in the scriptorium at the Monastery of St. Emmeram and this manuscript was declared a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic. The extensive cycle of images carefully rendered and detailed draw from the Regensburg School and Ottonian influences with a Christ’s genealogy on four divided pages. Within the 108 folios there are 26 pages depicting the gospels four of the Old Testament and 29 scenes from the life of Christ with large decorated illuminated initials. Originally the property of the Church of Vysehrad many scholars believe it was originally prepared for St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle and Vratislav II had secured his title after negotiations with Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV at the time in conflict with Pope Gregory VII as he continued insisting on the retaining the Slavonic liturgy and wanted to appoint his own bishops. 1909z07393Paris: Imprimerie Berthaud Frères 1909. First edition. Hardcover. Good . First edition 1909. Quarto. 2906 pp. plus 33 plates. In French. Portfolio original cloth-backed printed paper over boards printed spine label in original red slipcase. Ex-lib. with stamped institutional label on front pastedown. Ownership stamp of Arnold Bank and pencil annotations on front pastedown. Slipcase worn and separated with loss. Some toning and minor staining to boards title page toned. Plates clean. Good plus. Reproductions of the illuminated manuscript paintings and initials of the Psalter of Pope Paul III evidently by Vincent Raymond. Raymond who was active during the mid 16th century was named by Paul III the official Illuminator to the Papal Court - he is the only person known to have held this position. While the manuscript reproduced here is signed only by the copyist Fredrico Mario de Pérouse the author of the essay preceding the plates makes a strong argument for Raymond's responsibility for the paintings. 19153528Philadelphia 1915. Collection of a total of 285 manuscript and typescript pages of prose poetry and dramatic material written and edited by suffragist Sarah Dickson Lowrie 1870-1957. Lowrie a columnist and editor at the Philadelphia Public Ledger was also an activist. Founder of the Philadelphia Women's Committee later Chairperson of the Philadelphia League of Women Voters she used her public platform to promote equality for women and the working poor. An exceptional collection of material capturing the range of Lowrie's work as an author and editor including three genres across a period of at least 15 years. <br /> <br /> Included are:<br /> <br /> Autograph Manuscript including 5 published and unpublished works 202 pages dated 1900-1903<br /> Bound in half sheep over pebbled cloth measuring 7 x 8 inches and dated 1900-1903. The gift inscription in Lowrie's hand on the front endpaper "Mabel Norris Stewart April 1900" suggests that the notebook was a gift from her sister a major supporter of Sarah's career. Indeed the bulk of the manuscript documents Lowrie's composition and heavy revision of her story David the Hero from May 1900-August 1902 pages 1-35 59-175 with headings and notes for each section regarding dates of completion. The final entry states: "Finished these tales August 26 1902 - and dedicated them to Mary Mabel Norris Stewart with all my heart. Published Easter 1903." <br /> <br /> Interspersed within the notebook are other pieces of work by Lowrie. which appear to be unpublished. St. John of the Wilderness pages 35-56 is dated January-February 1901. The poem Away from You pages 57-58 is dated February 25 1901 and is accompanied by an original sketch. A story Peter the Fisherman pages 176-194 is dated August 25 1903. And the final piece dated November 25 1903 is on the death of her father pages 195-202 and appears to include a family history as well as a tribute to the man. Tucked loosely within the volume is a letter to Sarah from another female author identified only as J.S.C. regarding a short story. Also loosely inserted is a 1 page Autograph Poem unsigned in Lowrie's hand with content that ties together authorship and sex: ".Take my ovary Let me go Unapproached by further woe; But if you want What matters next Take o take my Appendix." Together the group shows her writing process and her ability to work on multiple projects during a highly creative period. Further research could link together the works based on religious themes Lowrie's work in activism and journalism and her own family's history.<br /> <br /> Autograph Playscript Signed for Me-Too 16 pages dated 1915<br /> Unbound but with a contemporary straight pin holding the upper left corner. Written fully in pencil with Lowrie's notation that the play was "written on July 19th & played on August 26 1915." What appears to largely be a fair copy of the two-act play the manuscript does contain checklists and notes on the first page regarding materials and equipment needed for staging. The final page is detached and incomplete but similarly contains scratch notes for the performance. <br /> <br /> Typed Manuscript Unsigned and hand annotated for The Idol 52 pages undated<br /> Unbound with loose pages measuring 8.5 x 11 inches. A short story -- possibly authored by Lowrie but definitely edited and annotated in her hand. Here the attention to detail and hands-on approach Lowrie takes are apparent. Meticulously corrected in type and in pencil with extensive portions excised or changed the typescript has also been cut apart and pasted back together throughout. The result is mispagination and the creation of a very new version of the original story.<br /> <br /> Autograph Poem Unsigned 4 pages undated<br /> Tied with blue string at the header. Pages measuring 6.75 x 10.25 inches and cut unevenly. A largely fair copy with one correction to the final line. Lowrie here tackles the themes of war violence and pacifism asserting women's place within them. "If I had been a pacifist 2000 years ago I grant you I'd have been unique and ready for a show. For in those old bloody days men really did in truth Demand an eye for a lost eye and for a tooth a tooth. One thousand years ago indeed the world had changed in part; Men's fights were then adjusted - sometimes - by words in court. Now I've been watching how things change And how the old's reversed; I always like to look ahead instead of last be first." References to war and technology including cars suggest that the present poem post-dates WWI.<br /> <br /> Typed Playscript Unsigned for The Flower Garden 8 pages undated<br /> Unbound but with two contemporary straightpins at the upper right corner. On legal paper measuring 8.5 x 12 inches. Annotated throughout in pencil with stage directions casting notes and revised lines. A play in one act it does appear that the play was performed and the present manuscript was used in its unfolding. The rear page is annotated heavily with the names of various players almost all women. Further research could definitely be conducted on those names and on the potential performance.<br /> <br /> <br /> Research opportunities abound for scholars including but not limited to American community theater performances the history of publication in women's magazines the connection between literature and women's activism themes in a pacifist suffragist's writing methods of composition and annotation and the work of Sarah Lowrie herself. unknown

1987BIBLIO-58011Bibliothèque nationale Paris first edition 1987. Cloth large 8vo 31 cm. xvi 235 pp 16 colour plates and 256 black-and-white ills on 109 plates. 260 entries. A detailed catalogue of 260 manuscripts in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale dating from the seventh century the Echtemach Gospels MS lat. 9389 onwards and either originating in the British Isles or illuminated by continental artisans clearly and strongly influenced by Insular forms. From a review by Robert G. Calkins in Speculum: "The entries are chronologically arranged insofar as possible and include all manuscripts containing any decoration beyond the slightest scribal embellishment without regard to aesthetic criteria. . Almost all manuscripts are illustrated with black-and-white photographs providing details of secondary as well as major decorations. The result is a thorough overview that presents a more balanced visual array of the total production than is usually found in catalogues of illuminated manuscripts. We can discover the range of decoration produced during a given period as well as follow the development of various decorative forms through the centuries the detailed description of manuscripts either previously unpublished or only cursorily mentioned in the literature provides a solid basis for further scholarship. Indeed this catalogue takes its place as an essential companion not only to the previous volumes presenting the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale but also to the series edited by J. J. G. Alexander A Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in the British Isles.". Very Good. Bibliothèque nationale, Paris, first edition, 1987 hardcover
255981798 1800 2 1806 and 1807 the last apparently a mistake for 1806. The first from St James’s Square the last from Clifton the others from Sundridge Kent. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. The five items are in good condition lightly aged with each on a 4to bifolium and all folded for postage. In a neat and attractive hand. The text of each letter is on the first leaf and the first two letters are addressed by Porteus on the reverse of the second leaf each with broken seals in red wax. In Letters Four and Five Porteus lays out his objections to Maurice’s ‘Elegy on the late Right Honourable William Pitt’ published in 1806 under the name ‘T. M.’ ONE St James’s Square 10 April 1898: 1p 4to. Addressed to ‘Revd. Mr Maurice / No. 19. Princes Street / Cavendish Square’. He is ‘overwhelmed by Business’ but hopes to read Maurice’s letter and two pamphlets ‘when I move into the Country’. ‘The Point you are labour is a curious & important one & I have little doubt of your being able to substantiate your opinion.’ TWO Sundridge 26 August 1800: 2pp 4to. Maurice’s letter arrived while he was ‘on a Visit in Oxfordshire’. He thanks him for the enclosed preface ‘which I hope will finish your Labours & afford you Leisure to attend more to your Health’. ‘It is to be lamented that the Situation at the Museum which most of your Friends thought peculiarly adapted to you is become unpleasant to you; & I think it will deserve a little further consideration from you before you resolve upon Exchanging it even if you were permitted. That Permission does not rest solely with the Archbishop; but if you continue in the same mind when I return to London in the Winter & have an opportunity of seeing the Archbishop I will have some conversation with his Grace on the subject & will communicate to him your wishes.’ THREE Sundridge 26 September 1800: 1p 4to. Franked to ‘Revd Mr Maurice / British Museum / London’ from ‘Sevenoakes - August / Twenty Six. 1800 B. London’. He has returned from ‘a Visit in Hampshire’ to find ‘the five last Volumes of the Indian Antiquities which you was so obliging as to send me; & of which I beg that I may be allowed to pay the current Price’’. As Maurice has communicated his wishes ‘to the ABp & Bp of Lincoln’ Porteus will ‘not fail to converse with them on that subject when we meet’. FOUR Sundridge 4 September 1806: 2pp 4to. He is sending a banker’s draft for ten guineas. ‘I have read your Elegy on Mr Pitt & think it has great merit & is written in the true Poetical energy & ardor. To a few expressions & a few lines I have some objections’. One of these is Porteus’s use of the word ‘saviour’: ‘too strong & too sacred an expression to be applied to any human Being however great’. He goes into greater detail in explaining why it is ‘going too far’ to suggest that ‘any of the Human Race immediately after Death is appointed to ‘Minister to Heaven’s Eternal King’â€. Regarding one turn of expression: ‘There are acts of Power that belong solely to the Almighty; & the last expression is so peculiarly appropriated to our blessed Lord that it is surely very improper to preidcate it of any other Person whatever.’ While he is sure that no offence was meant he urges Maurice to ‘reconsider & remove’ all ‘ambiguity’. FIVE Clifton 26 August 1807 but the year apparently a mistake for 1806: 2pp 4to. Having received a ‘pacquet by the Bristol Mail’ he laments that Maurice has not followed his advice ‘both with respect to the Mode of Publication & the Alteration of the Passage to which I objected. - By printing the Poem at your own risque sic on so large & expensive a scale you will I fear again involve yourself in difficulties which you will not easily surmount: & by retaining the Objectionable Line you will I am persuaded prejudice many serious Persons against your Poem which in other respects has considerable merit. - Indeed in looking again at the whole of the Portrait you have drawn of that truly great man whom you celebrate & of whom I think as highly as any man can possibly do I perceive several other expressions which appear to me objectionable - no mortal man however great & good should be dignified with the sacred name of the Saviour of his Country p.117 which should be appropriated solely to the Saviour of the World. Nor should the Almighty be represented as displaying to one of his own Creatures all his vast designs p.122. Nor can any dead Man be the Guardian or Protector of Kingdoms & Empires. P.123. This Power belongs to God alone.’ He gives Maurice ‘full credit for not meaning any Thing improper by such expressions’ and is ‘willing to make all due allowance for the Enthusiasm of a Poet & the flights of an ardent Imagination. But still when he treads so close on hallowed Ground he must proceed with great caution & reverential Awe & not ascribe to any human Being those properties & Powers which are the peculiar Attributes of the omnipotent Sovereign of the Universe’. He ends by stating that he is only writing to Maurice out of an interest ‘for your Credit & that of your Poem’ ‘for indeed in my present precarious state of Health I find writing very inconvenient to me; & it is therefore now my wish that this matter may rest here & that nothing more may be said on the Subject either on your part or mine.’ 1798, 1800 (2), 1806 and 1807 (the last apparently a mistake for 1806). The first from St James’s Square, the last from Clifto unknown
