This copy is inscribed by the editor on the front free endpaper to John G. Carter and dated at Washington D.C. January 14 1928. John Galen Carter the son of Senator Thomas Henry Carter and Ellen L. Galen Carter was born in Washington. He was educated in Helena and Georgetown Prep School. He received his BA from Georgetown University in 1914 and his MA in 1915. He graduated from Georgetown Law School in 1918. In 1921 he joined the A. R. Serven law firm and worked with cases mainly involving the government and specialized in Indian Affairs. He was a member of the American Anthropological Society. His papers are at Montana State University. Large folio First Edition some moderate age-staining a handful of leaves expertly remargined; strongly bound in early twentieth-century terracotta buckram gilt back uncut a very good bright clean crisp copy. Sold from an institution with its bookplate on front paste-down and small neat stamp on title verso. The Lansdowne MSS are a significant named collection forming part of the holdings of the British Library. They include State papers and correspondence of Lord Burghley Papers of Sir Julius Caesar Papers of Dr. White Kennett his manuscripts passed to James West and so to Lansdowne historical papers from the 15th-18th centuries William Petyt's parliamentary papers and papers of legal interest and topographical and heraldic collections of great importance. The MSS were purchased by the british Museum at Sotheby's auction in 1807. Casting an interesting sidelight on the purchasing practices of the British Museum Manuscripts Department. All three items in good condition on lightly-aged paper. Totalling 6pp. 12mo. On three bifoliums. ONE: ALS. 4 December 1912. 3pp. 12mo. As it is 'difficult to advise without further information as to the nature of the old papers' he invites her to 'send them up' so that he can 'report whether there is any probability of their purchase by the Trustees of the British Museum'. If they are 'bulky' he suggests sending 'specimens'. 'Are they deeds local records correspondence private or public' He gives an address advises sending by registered post 'or insured by rail' and states that they would be returned at her expense. TWO: ALS. 14 December 1912. 2pp. 12mo. He has examined 'the old deeds' which are 'all of some interest in connexion with Yorkshire monasteries etc but the best of them the visitation of Gisburn is very imperfect'. He feels she may be 'disappointed as to their monetary value. As none of them are of very early date and there are no seals I do not think I could offer to recommend them to the Trustees for more than an average of four shillings each i.e £2 for the lot'.
