In a glassine wrapper housed in a slipcase covered in maroon cloth with cream paper spine label with burgundy lettering and ornaments.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean the corners straight with no rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; clea crisp as new. The announcement and Monthly Newsletter are near fine clean without wear with a few shallow creases to the bottom margin of the Newsletter and a small stray mark at the bottom of the announcement. The glassine wrapper is near fine clean with a few small chips to the corners and tail of the spine with light edge wear to the bottom edge. Voltaire concludes Candide with a practical precept "we must cultivate our garden" in lieu of the "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds". Candide has enjoyed both great success and great scandal. Immediately after its secretive publication the book was widely banned to the public because it contained religious blasphemy political sedition and intellectual hostility hidden under a thin veil of naïveté. A noted philosopher Doctor Pangloss tutors the baron on philosophical optimism. Candide a simple man first accepts this philosophy but as he experiences the horrors of war poverty the maliciousness of man and the hypocrisy of the Church he begins to doubt the voracity of Pangloss�s theory. Thus philosophical optimism is the focus of Voltaire�s Satire; antiwar and antichurch refrains also run throughout the novel. Candide makes his way to a neighbouring town where he is aided by two soldiers. He is pressed into service and endures beating at the hands of his superiors. He was slapped in every direction by fate. In Paris Candide becomes ill and is attended by a variety of people all of whom want a piece of his fortune. He recovers but is tricked by an actress into giving away much of his fortune and is eventually arrested by the police. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Francois � Marie Arouet Voltaire 1694 1778 was a French Enlightenment writer historian and Philosopher famous for his wit his attacks on the established Catholic Church and his advocacy of freedom of religion freedom of speech and separation of Church and state. He wrote more than 20000 letters and more than 2000 books and pamphlets.
