Thomas Frognall Dibdin 1776-1847 born in Calcutta India English bibliographer who helped to stimulate interest in bibliography by his own enthusiastic though often inaccurate books by his share in founding the first English private publishing society and by his beautifully produced catalog of Lord Spencer’s library which collection later became the nucleus of the John Rylands Library Manchester. His father the captain of a sailing ship was the inspiration for his Uncle Charles Dibdin’s song "Tom Bowling." Both of Dibdin’s parents died on the passage from India to England in 1780 and at age four he became the ward of his mother’s younger brother Charles Compton. Educated at St. John’s College Oxford Dibdin began a legal career but took holy orders in 1805. His Introduction to the knowledge of rare and valuable editions of the Greek and Latin Classics 1802 attracted the notice of Lord Spencer through whose patronage Dibdin obtained a clerical appointment in London. His Bibliotheca Spenceriana 1814–15 became famous for the high quality of its printing. Dibdin traveled widely in search of books and manuscripts and his Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821 is typical of his work in containing much lively anecdote many factual errors and some excellent engravings. His Bibliomania 1809 contributed to the public’s interest in old and rare books. Among his many other works is the two-volume autobiography Reminiscences of a Literary Life 1836. - Britannica W. 1791007574London: S. W. Fores 1791. First Edition. 18th Century broadside of song lyrics and hand-colored etching of foxhunting scene. Uncommon in physical form. Dibdin 1745-1814 was a singer-songwriter nearly two centuries prior to the elevation of that combination. There were always composers who publicly performed their own music of course. He was more versatile than that though. He also wrote operas novels and plays. He collaborated with legendary theater manager David Garrick and served for a time as the Music Director at Covent Garden. The "Oddities" for which this song was written was performed in 1789. Visible part of broadside under glass and matting 36 by 24 cm. With wood frame and matting 50 by 36.5 cm. The frame is of a burled cherry we believe the matting green with a thin white beveling and we believe most would find the framing attractive and worth retaining. S. W. Fores unknown

17991238331p. London: April 12 1799. 1p. oblong 4to a bit soiled and once removed from an album with tape marks on verso. § Very early ALS concerning ‘some Dramatic German M.SS which you might perhaps like to purchase’ from the bearer a lady: ‘Any arrangement you may make with her I shall consider as one of honour done myself’. On 3 Sept 1814 defending his hope to take a profit on the ‘Lincoln Nosegay’ enterprise Dibdin wrote to Earl Spencer that he had ‘for the last 7 years never received a single farthing profit upon any article with which I may have accommodated a friend or bookseller’. This early letter with no agency commission implied suggests an even earlier disdain for commercial remuneration or recompense save in friendly credit or gratitude for ‘negotiations’ or ‘diplomacy’ in such matters. Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian tours made shortly after the end of the long-running wars with France along with everyone else and his dog who could afford it apparently. Dibdin's tour however is unique in being one made with the chief purpose of admiring fine libraries across the continent though of course architecture and local manners are considered as well. Dibdin is best-known as the founder of the Roxburghe Club convened initially to mark the sale of the Duke of Roxburghe's famous library in June 1812 and then re-formed each year on its anniversary. It became the very first Book Club and remains the most exclusive in the world with no more than 40 active members at any one time. London: Printed for the author, by W. Bulmer and W.
