Occasional use of colour as in the facsimile of a section from the Bayeux Tapestry and occasional hinged plates. Also including two indexes of Books and Manuscripts and of Persons Places and Things to volume I and the Supplement to volume III. Contemporary or slightly later green half morocco with raised bands gilt titles and decoration to spines and marbled paper over boards. Top edges gilt; others untrimmed. Generally quite a clean copy with some light occasional spotting to plates and some offsetting to facing leaves. Volume II has a number of small repaired chips and tears to the margins of some leaves while volume I has recently been re-cased including new leather applied to hinges and the tail-cap and a new tail-band. Repairs also to hinges. Moderate wear to bindings with rubbing chipping and re-colouring to bands hinges and corners and some wear to marbled boards. Very good. The first of the inimitable Rev. Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian tours made shortly after the end of the long-running wars with France along with everyone else and his dog who could afford it apparently. Dibdin's tour however is unique in being one made with the chief purpose of admiring fine libraries across the continent though of course architecture and local manners are considered as well. Dibdin is best-known as the founder of the Roxburghe Club convened initially to mark the sale of the Duke of Roxburghe's famous library in June 1812 and then re-formed each year on its anniversary. It became the very first Book Club and remains the most exclusive in the world with no more than 40 active members at any one time. London: Printed for the author, by W. Bulmer and W. While this is the 4th edition it contains for the first time the best editions of the Hebrew Bibles and of the Greek and Latin Fathers. Several Greek and Latin classics introduced for the first time and some authors are described in a fuller manner such as Cicero Demosthenes and Euripides. It is also enriched with notices of copies of early rare and valuable impressions of the Classics printed on vellum which are found in various libraries in Europe. This is considered one of the first "leaf books" . On page 166 of Vol. I there is a small specimen leaf mounted from Pickering's Diamond Edition of the Greek New Testament. A very handsome set bound in 3/4 brown polished calf over marbled paper covered boards raised bands ruled in gilt red and black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt all edges red faint damp stain along upper edge of frontispiece with just a bit of cosmetics to spine ends light wear to corners. Tipped in is a manuscript note not important to front pastedown from previous owner or bookseller pertaining to the books and Dibdin. Very nice internally fresh. Previous owner's name D.M. Plate and specimen leaf p. 166 present in vol. 1. Some foxing to first and last few original pages diminishing quickly a bit more noticeable on v 2. Light fingermarks on upper corners of some pages. vol. 1 xiii 562 p. vol. 2 579 p. w/ 1 p. corrigenda. Large paper copies limited to 250 Dibdin's Reminscences p. 213. Considered the best of the editions of this work adding the best of both Hebrew bibles and editions of the early church fathers.
