Cathers & Bro.; some ink stains along the spine; otherwise very good. Bookseller's ticket of J. Cathers & Bro. Baltimore. Hundreds of songs from the English composer Thomas Dibdin 1745-1814. Prepared for publication by his illegitimate son the dramatist Thomas John Dibdin 1771-1845. A member of the circle which included Garrick Sheridan and Harris Dibdin boasted truly "My songs have been the solace of sailors in long voyages in storms in battle; and they have been quoted in mutinies to the restoration or order and discipline." It is said that his sea songs of which he is the indisputable master were responsible for bringing more men into the Navy in war time than could all the press-gangs. Henry G. 190350084Boston: The Bibliophile Society 1903. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very good. Quarto Limited wition of 483 sets bound in green and ivory paper over boards. Each with a frontis with an etching by W.H.W. Bicknell after a painting by Howard Pyle. A light abrasion on front cover of volume 4 otherwise a very good sound set. Laid into volume 1 is a unique disclaimer from the printer indicating a misprint on one page and the determined to be a misprint by members of the 'Council' in charge of the printing. He goes on to dramatize the comic decisions made by the printers proof readers and editor. Inspite of this it still slipped through the cracks and "idioddities" went topress. The errata is printed on Bibliophile Society watermarked paper.

The Bibliophile Society hardcover

Ã’Thomas Frognall Dibdin 1776-1847 English bibliographer who helped to stimulate interest in bibliography by his own enthusiastic though often inaccurate books by his share in founding the first English private publishing society and by his beautifully produced catalog of Lord SpencerÕs library which collection later became the nucleus of the John Rylands Library Manchester. His father the captain of a sailing ship was the inspiration for his uncle Charles DibdinÕs song Ã’Tom Bowling.Ó Both of DibdinÕs parents died on the passage from India to England in 1780 and at age four he became the ward of his motherÕs younger brother Charles Compton. Educated at St. JohnÕs College Oxford Dibdin began a legal career but took holy orders in 1805. His Introduction to the knowledge of rare and valuable editions of the Greek and Latin Classics 1802 attracted the notice of Lord Spencer through whose patronage Dibdin obtained a clerical appointment in London. His Bibliotheca Spenceriana 1814Ã15 became famous for the high quality of its printing. Dibdin traveled widely in search of books and manuscripts and his Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821 is typical of his work in containing much lively anecdote many factual errors and some excellent engravings. His Bibliomania 1809 contributed to the publicÕs interest in old and rare books. Among his many other works is the two-volume autobiography Reminiscences of a Literary Life 1836.Ó -Britannica.
