The advertised intention of 'The Library Companion' was to provide a guide to the best books for study and reference in all parts of learning seasoned with literary and bibliophilic anecdotes. But his passions for the rare and curious diverted Dibdin from these worthy aims and as one of his friends remarked he once again 'became rampant' on editions typography illustrations bindings and rare book prices. However the modern reader will find a good many interesting details about books collectors and book trade personalities of the time. c.f. Bound in modern quarter calf with marbled boards and endpapers after 19th century style. Pages are generally clean with occasional mild scattered marginal foxing; a few minor tears are professionally sealed; a tiny hole in pp. 723/24 effects a couple letters of text; a name is lightly written in an early hand on corner of front fly-leaf of each volume. Dibdin discusses the best books with which to fill an English gentlemans antiquarian library. Quarter bound in modern cloth paper labeled over the original boards. The boards are corner bumped and stained but remain strong and tight. Both remain particularly well-preserved overall. Thirteen volumes 12 mo 5 x 3 inches contemporary grained burgundy calf double gilt rules to sides with floral corner ornaments all edges gilt. Spines gilt lettered direct with the title of each play within. Headbands joints and corners rubbed but overall a very pleasing set; good strong and attractive. Extremely rare in this full and continuous set. A few illustrations accompany each play. This is an extraordinary collection of the popular and canonical theater of the day with some informative notes about the plays premier and players sometimes listing those of contemporary performances sometimes those who originated the plays. The plays include farces burlesques operas essentially musicals or operettas not full-fledged operas masques tragedies etc. Some from playwrights still revered and even performed such as Sheridan Congreve Milton Garrick Colley; others by now obscure writers. Also curious is the number of plays written by women and this might constitute an interesting springboard for study on female writers in the theater.
