Arthur Freeman has one of these still in original boards and Roxburghe quarter roan inscribed by Dibdin 'To Miss Currer From the Author April 19.1839. The first copy into boards.' Jackson states that there were 100 large-paper copies bound in three volumes with a third title-page inserted before p. 815 and with the index at the end of vol.3. The quantity of the regular issue is not known. The Barlow copy in original boards uncut has an eighteen-page Bohn catalogue an octavo and an additional leaf bound at the end of vol.I. 'I think it belongs there since it is printed by the same printer as the book on what appears to be the same paper.The unusual thing . is that it appears to be excerpts from a rare book catalogue selected specifically for this book rather than a publisher's catalogue.' Barlow in litt. Freeman's 'first copy into boards' has only pp.17-18 the last single leaf of this catalogue bound in at the end. This copy like Barlow's has the entire catalogue.<br /> <br /> Tipped into vol. 1 is an autograph letter from Dibdin dated 20 November 1848 addressee unknown. "May I venture to solicit your transferring your name from my "Reformation Lectures" which are postponed perhaps sine die to the enclosed work. Corners gently rounded and the leather somewhat dried but the black morocco spine label and gilt remain bright. Fresh and clean internally. Surprisingly scarce volume filled with lyrics by the English composer and songwriter. Dibdin's brother was similarly talented as was his son and his first cousin was Thomas Frognall Dibdin the noted English bibliographer and book collector. Heavy foxing to inner-covers end-papers and throughout text to varying degrees. Fair condition for a very rare item.<br /><br />The first of three French responses to Dibdin's Tour in France and Germany comprising of a translation of Dibdin's thirtieth letter from his Tour. What marks this publication out is the introduction written by the Parisian printer Georges Crapelet contesting Dibdin's veracity on occasions and criticising his general writing style as being too concerned with effect and over-complicated " Il vise singulièrement à l'effet ne dit jamais rien simplement ".</p><p>Crapelet contrasts Dibdin's petulance and perpetual enthusiasm with the patience and contemplation he argues is necessary for bibliographical studies.</p><p>That being said he also 'tips his printer's hat' to the quality of Dibdin's book production in paricular his abundant use of illustrations in his publications.</p><p><br />Windle & Pippin A39.</p><p><br /><strong>As a high value item shipping costs will be greater than the average quoted. Contemporary diced russia decorative gilt borders to boards and decorated compartments on spine leather spine-label misspelling "Quales" 8vo 19 cm. lxiv 332 pp portrait frontispiece. Uncommon. In the preliminary "Advertisement" leaf to Dibdin's extremely rare 1809 second edition which is not in Windle & Pippin Dibdin refers to "some hundred copies of this work having been sold" with Wolfe's name as editor and in the Reminiscences 1836 he states " this book is now so scarce that I know not where a copy may be found". Dibdin took his pseudonym from the name of a Strasbourg printer who settled in London about 1557. His principal editorial contribution was to modernize the orthography. Rubbed and worn at extremities some loss to head of spine small scrapes and marks to rear board some spotting and darkening to frontispiece and title-page otherwise Good. On page 166 Vol. I there is an actual tipped in specimen leaf from Pickering's Diamond Edition of the Greek New Testament. Still a useful reference tool and difficult to find in the fourth edition. Top corners with a little bit of bleed from previous adhesive on verso overall excellent and suitable for framing. 7.5 x 4.75 inches. The reproduction fomr the Douce & Dibdin were cut from wood by Messrs. Bonner and Byfield. The authors aimed to provide extremely accurate woodcut representations of the original Holbein designs to readers.
