An attractive copy in original boards of this finely printed and richly illustrated survey of printing in the British Isles including chapters on Caxton Wynkyn de Worde and Pynson. The first Dibdin edition being his enlargement of Joseph Ames's account of English printing to 1600 which was originally published in 1749. This copy retains the very scarce half-sheet "Directions for boarding and binding" at the back of volume 2 which Windle and Pippin note in only one other copy. Copies in boards uncommon. The work came as an enlargement of Joseph Ames's account of printing in England from 1471 to 1600 published 1749. Ames's intuition was the prime importance of first-hand knowledge of books the primacy of the title-page on printed lists and catalogues. Dibdin adopted this innovative rigor and endowed it with his own taste for anecdote and romance. The compelling quality of his writings was acutely felt by Isaac D'Israeli who on receiving a copy of Dibdin's Bibliomania wrote to him: "I have not yet recovered from the delightful delirium into which your Bibliomania has completely thrown me." 1831BIBLIO-59137Longman Rees Orme Brown and Green London first edition 1831. 6 volumes later blue half-calf and cloth gilt spine decoration and red leather title-panels 16mo 18 cm. various paginations tissue-guarded frontispiece portraits. Scarce Rare Book Hub has no auction record since 1954 and that for a supposed '1832' edition. An attractive collection of sermons of which Dibdin wrote in a letter "My hope & object is to fight Methodism with my right hand and radicalism with my left - by the influence of the excellent Sermons selected." Dibdin contributed the biographical sketches and notes in addition to any editing of the sermons but acknowledged privately that these were really included to protect copyright. Some 40 clerics are represented including several acquaintances of Dibdin e.g. Blomfield DOyly Heber Rennell and Sydney Smith. The publication was successful financially with a second edition produced in 1833-35 and Lister notes "Over 4000 sets were sold which is most remarkable in view of the considerable scarcity of the book today". Alas Dibdin's share of the proceeds was insufficient to make much impact on his very poor finances at the time - apart from his other troubles he had expensive costs from defending a libel action he had innocently become involved in. The set is bound without the advertisement leaves or half-titles mentioned in Windle & Pippin otherwise conforming to the pagination of their entry A56a with minor differences Vol III page 2 not numbered Vol IV prelims not numbered. A handsome first edition set slightly rubbed otherwise Very Good with a little faint foxing largely confined to the endpapers. Many of the songs had a lasting influence on the spirit of the navy especially during the protracted war with France. Each is present in an engraved musical score with lyrics.</p> <p>The collection was put together by the prolific Charles Dibdin 1745-1815. His son Thomas in a brief biographical notice appended to the 1850 collective edition of his father's sea-songs remarked: "These songs have been the solace of sailors in long voyages in storms in battles; and they have been quoted in mutinies to the restoration of order and discipline". Readers may be surprised to learn that many take "Grog" or trouncing the French as their theme.</p> <p>Bringing out his first two-act opera when he was only sixteen Dibdin had a long career as an actor and singer and worked briefly with David Garrick. A seemingly inexhaustible writer he composed some one thousand songs during his career and was also a sometime playwright self-publishing Great News or A Trip to the Antipodes in 1794. For a complete list of the dramatist-composer's published and unpublished plays musical entertainments and compositions see E.R. Dibdin A Dibdin Bibliography Liverpool 1937. Dibdin was not much of a sailor himself: in 1788 he sailed for the East Indies but bad weather forced the ship back to port at Torbay. He took it as a sign and returned to London.</p> <p>This book neatly demonstrates the difficulty of producing a book with a letterpress introduction and engraved plates throughout: several numbers are omitted from the series and conversely three listed songs are not included. No previous owner's names not exlibrary. Overall in GOOD condition. Photos available upon request. Thomas John Dibdin March 21 1771 September 16 1841 was an English dramatist and song-writer. Dibdin was the son of Charles Dibdin a song-writer and theatre manager and of Mrs Davenet an actress whose real name was Harriet Pitt. He was apprenticed to his maternal uncle a London upholsterer and later to William Rawlins afterwards sheriff of London. He summoned his second master unsuccessfully for rough treatment; and after a few years of service he ran away to join a company of country players. From 1789 to 1795 he played all sorts of parts; he worked as a scene painter at Liverpool in 1791; and during this period he composed more than 1000 songs. His first work as a dramatist was Something New followed by The Mad Guardian in 1795. He returned to London in 1795 having married two years before; and in the winter of 1798-99 The Jew and the Doctor was produced at Theatre Royal Covent Garden. From this time he contributed a very large number of comedies operas farces etc. to the public entertainment. Some of these brought immense popularity to the writer and immense profits to the theatres. It is stated that the pantomime of Mother Goose 1807 produced more than £20000 for the management at Covent Garden theatre and the High-mettled Racer adapted as a pantomime from his father's play £18000 at Astley's. Dibdin was prompter and pantomime writer at Theatre Royal Drury Lane until 1816 when he took over the Surrey Theatre. This venture proved disastrous and he became bankrupt. After this he was manager of the Haymarket Theatre but without his old success and his last years were passed in comparative poverty. In 1827 he published two volumes of Reminiscences; and at the time of his death he was preparing an edition of his father's sea songs for which a small sum was allowed him weekly by the lords of the admiralty.
