Antoine Hamilton's Contes or Tales to the first two volumes with his 'Zeneyde' and 'Des Facardins' bound to the end of volume II. Volume III is his Works which include his 'Lettres et Eptres' his 'Poesies Diverses' and his 'Chansons'. Collated complete. All three volumes are written entirely in French. Antoine Hamilton was an Irish classical author of Scottish ancestry who wrote in French. His literary characteristics are those of a French author and his 'Memoires du comte de Gramont' made him one of the classical writers of France. Hamilton was raised in France as his family fled after the execution of Charles I. In half calf bindings with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally smart with rubbing to the joints and the head and tails of the spines. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown Clonmore. Internally all volumes are firmly bound. With 2 page Intoductory letter on blue paper stock 1 page "Form of Application" printed in black and red and "Map shewing the Levis & Kennebec railway and connections" approximately 43x28cm folded to narrow Octavo 21.5x10cm showing the proposed route in red. Small hole and several short closed tears else a very good copy of an ephemeral piece. very good At head: "Dominion of Canada". The proposed railway from Levis Quebec to Kennebec Maine was to connect with a railway under construction from Lexington Maine to Kennebec. The president of the company was the Hon. J. G. Blanchet - Speaker Legislative Assembly the Vice President the Hon. Thomas McGreevy M.P. and directors included the Mayor of Quebec P. Garneau and J. 1810161693Paris: P. Didot l'Ainé 1810. First edition of this intriguing work of futuristic fiction imagining a visit to Europe in the early 20th century by a Chinese couple. The work marks the first use of the narrative device of a pull-out newspaper from the future - in this case the Journal du Déjeneur recounting world events on 15 September 1910. Les Voyages de Kang-Hi is intended "partly to describe present French manners from a distancing perspective. and partly to show plausible developments in technology" Alkon pp. 198-9 and it emulates the form of Montesquieu's Persian Letters. The author 1764-1830 was the son of Marshal Francis de Gaston and a politician and intellectual. During the French Revolution following the dissolution of the National Constituent Assembly of which he was a member he fled to England. 2 vols duodecimo 168 x 97 mm. With 3 folding plates. Near-contemporary quarter sheep smooth spine divided by gilt scrolling rolls compartments tooled with gilt five-pointed stars red and green labels red sides pale blue endpapers edges yellow and speckled blue. Near-contemporary ownership label of one L. Perrin fils on front pastedowns. Losses to spines worming to two boards and final 30 leaves of vol. II slightly affecting text first plates in vol.
