Resident in Shanghai from 1904 to 1949 the author 1894-1961 was proficient in several Chinese instruments and toured the US in the 1930s giving lectures on Chinese music and performing his own compositions. This study was much admired by the cultural critic Lin Yutang and the famous opera performer Mei Lanfang. Octavo. With half-tone tipped in as frontispiece diagrams musical scores and Chinese characters in text. Original red cloth spine lettered in gilt boards panelled in blind. With dust jacket. Remains of bookseller's ticket on front pastedown.
