The first edition of this work in a half speckled calf binding with marbled boards. Ink inscription to the half title page. Évariste Desiré de Forges vicomte de Parny 1753-1814 was a French poet who made his fame through his Poésies érotiques 1778 a collection of love poems which made a refreshing change to the formal academic poetry of the eighteenth century. Parny's work was often censored as it contained erotic content and sometimes blasphemous humour.This is his poem 'Les Rosecroix' written in twelve parts in the original French. In a half calf binding. Externally smart with just a little rubbing to the extremities and light shelf wear to the front board. Internally firmly bound. A first edition.Evariste de Parny was a French poet well known in the nineteenth century for his lyric poems especially the Posies Erotiques 1778-81 and the prose-poems in Chansons Madcasses 1787. He also wrote much humorous verse including the anti-religious La Guerre des Dieux 1799 and Le Paradis perdu 1805. The latter is a parody of Milton's Paradise Lost in four relatively short cantos.This work contains 'Le Paradis perdu' Paradise Lost a poem in four songs; 'Les Desguisements de Venus' The Disguises of Venus and 'Les Galanteries de la Bible' The Gallantries of the Bible'. A smart collection of French verse. In a decorative full calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing. Internally firmly bound. Handsome copy.La guerre des dieux is a satirical poem in which the gods of the Christian religion and those of Greco-Roman mythology clash; it gave rise to numerous complaints from its publication and was at the same time placed very highly in this type of production due to the quality of its language and style. The first editions are sought after because all subsequent ones were expurgated. Following this famous poem by Parny an amateur has gathered several texts from the same period accounting for the situation of religion in France; the texts illuminate each other and allow one to understand the circumstances that could have given birth to Parny's poem. Chénier's second text is also a satire on religion and philosophers. Theophilanthropy emerged in 1797 a movement placing the love of God and mankind above all things and departing from the church. The article that follows is a defense of natural religion and its adherents. The last text brings together philosophy and natural religion and rejects all superstition. Bookplate of Auguste Dide. The presence of fleurs-de-lis is doubtless explained by the fact that the first Earl of Lucan was the son of Jacques Fitz-James naturalized French. Although the poet Parny pre-Romantic in his writing has today fallen into disuse he was not only popular but received unequaled esteem from his peers; thus Chateaubriand wrote: ""I knew by heart the elegies of the Chevalier de Parny and I still know them"" and Pushkin evoking erotic poetry said that Parny was his master.
