Typee was Melville's first novel inspired by the author's experiences on the island Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Originally published in 1846 in London as Narrative of a Four Month Residence Among the Natives of the Marquesa Islands; or A Peep at Polynesian Life.
