Copy #1348 of 1500 numbered copies printed at the Harbor Press illustrated in color by Miguel Covarrubias and signed by him. With an important Introduction by Raymond Weaver who has inscribed this copy prominently on the free endsheet: "To Eleanor Metcalf with faithful regards Raymond Weaver 22 January 1936." An excellent association copy: the recipient was Melville's granddaughter and for decades a touchstone for Melville scholarship. Limited Editions Club hardcover books

Page size: 12 x 12-1/4 inches. 26 pp; plus triple-page wood engraving. Bound: beige linen cloth that has been printed in very pale blue and gray at the out third front and back panels title stamped in black on spine. Front pastedown is an original paper mache sculpture of grayish-tan handmade paper of the "Rock Rodondo" with the Frigate-bird according to Melville the ".man of-war hawk.that makes his first land at Rodondo" flying towards it. The back pastedown has a tan fold over with wood engraving of Frigate-birds in flight protecting a triple-page fold-up wood engraving printed on ivory Japanese paper of the "Rock Redondo" with the aquatic birds that inhabit it. The back flyleaf contains an "Artist's Note" with a key to the birds pictured on the "tower." The binding is the result of the collaboration between Ron Keller of Red Angel Press and Philip Warner who designed and screen-printed the image on the covers. Mr. Warner who lives and works in New York City teaches at the Parsons School of Design; and his work on textiles and papers has been exhibited in numerous one-man and group shows throughout the country.<br/>This is an elaborate and unique presentation of Melville's text. Hand-set and printed in Bembo the text is handsomely set off by Keller's graceful birds. The title page also features the Frigate-bird in flight; these are blind stamped. An elegant presentation an homage to Melville. Out of print for several years it is available only on the secondary market. Red Angel Press unknown books

There was an additional 50 copies printed that were not bound in leather. The paper has minor spotting which is inherent in the manufacture of the paper. The text is otherwise clean and unmarked. Omoo is the second book by American writer Herman Melville first published in London in 1847 preceding the American edition by several weeks and a sequel to his first South Sea narrative Typee also based on the author's experiences in the South Pacific. After leaving the island of Nuku Hiva the main character ships aboard a whaling vessel that makes its way to Tahiti after which there is a mutiny and a third of the crew are imprisoned on Tahiti. 1976WRCLIT70880Los Angeles: United Artists 1976. Original b&w paste-up for reproduction 53.5 x 34 cm mounted to much larger mat board with acetate overlay. Some tanning and rubber cement stains some minor loss of letterpress at lower margin but in good state. An example of the production artwork for the highly pictorial one-sheet issued to promote the 1976 re-release of the 1956 Warner Brothers production directed by John Huston based on a screenplay by Ray Bradbury and Huston and starring Gregory Peck Richard Basehart Orson Welles et al. This poster features a vivid reconception of the artwork for the original release and adds the tag- line: "Before the Shark There was the Whale." The main artwork is partially affixed to the matboard while the larger letterpress and the pictorial vignette of Peck with harpoon in hand are laid down on the overlaid acetate sheet. Particulars in smaller font are affixed in strips below the main image on the matboard and a large caption "6-0937 1 SH FOREIGN PROOF is written in black felt-tip in the lower left corner. Giono's work as translator in company with his pacifist colleagues was accomplished contemporary with his writing of his own semi-fictional prose work MELVILLE. His visible speech system predates the International Phonetic Alphabet by about 20 years and was his attempt at creating a system of writing that could both represent every sound produced in any language and would also be derived from the physical act of producing sound so that it could be taught to deaf students by way of the physiology of language alone. The Arctic Drift. Melville's Remarks given in response to Nansen's Fram Expedition largely relates his own experience of having drifted in the "Jeannette" with comparisons to Nansen's intentional voyage among the Arctic drifts. In pursuit of evidence of an Arctic current and reaching the Pole Nansen in the "Fram" the first custom-build "arctic ship" set off in June of 1893. By approaching the floes off East Siberia and allowing the current to carry them the ship was frozen in for 2 1/2 years and travelled some 400 miles without the usual hardship associated with arctic exploration. Nansen realizing that the current was not to carry them to the North Pole in January 1895 set off with a dog team and a single man Hjalmar Johansen to attempt to reach the Pole. When it became evident that this would not be possible and after great difficulties they made their way to Franz Joseph Land where they met up with Frederick Jackson who had been seeking a land route to the Pole. They returned to Norway on his ship where they met the "Fram" in perfect condition. Nansen had proven that the North Pole was surrounded by ice and that the arctic drift. WH/9/86/6 unknown books
