First edition of the memoirs of the Scottish diplomat "among the most important sources for British history in the second half of the sixteenth century through the light they shed on the human qualities of the leading actors on the public stage" ODNB. The binding in a very good state of preservation has the device of Henry Yelverton elevated in 1690 as 1st Viscount de Longueville 1664-1700. On the initial binder's blank verso is the ownership signature "B Talbot March ye 10th 1683" - Barbara Talbot 1671-1763 married Yelverton in 1689 though the early date implies it was probably her mother Barbara Talbot born c.1633. "Yelverton amassed a substantial library whose extent is not known but many volumes are traceable today in libraries around the world in English Latin Italian and Spanish with imprints from the early 16th century to the late 17th. Yelverton's stamp was often applied to books irrespective of their binding when acquired. Books with the HL stamp are also sometimes found with inscriptions of other members of the Yelverton family" Book Owners Online. Melville 1535-1617 served as diplomat for Mary Queen of Scots and all four regents in the minority of James VI afterwards retiring from public life and writing his memoirs. This edition was published by his grandson George Scott of Pitlochie. Walter Scott in his History of Scotland stated they may "justly be compared with the most valuable materials which British history afford". Folio 294 x 191 mm pp. xvi 204 28. Contemporary sprinkled calf spine lettered in gilt blind coroneted initials of Viscount de Longueville to covers red speckled edges. Front pastedown with book label and ownership signature dated July 1936 of John Lowe Weir 1912-1994 Librarian at the Baillie's Institution in Glasgow and Keeper of Manuscripts at Glasgow University Library. Very minor wear to spine and joints contents clean and crisp: an excellent well-preserved copy. ESTC R201; Wing M1654. unknown

The first edition of these memoirs by Scottish diplomat Sir James Melville who served at the courts of Mary Queen of Scots for whom he acted as an envoy to Elizabeth I of England and James VI and I. <p>Provenance: Thomas Gibson-Carmichael 1st Baron Carmichael 1859-1926 Governor of Victoria from 1908 to 1911 with the small label of his Castlecraig Library on the front pastedown. Octavo original publisher's cloth elaborately decorated in gilt all edges gilt illustrated. Presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Fanny Melville from her brother Herman April 1876 New York." Presentation inscription likely in the hand of Melville’s wife. Herman Melville was born in New York City on August 1 1819 to Allan Melvill 1782–18323 and Maria Gansevoort Melvill 1791–1872. Herman was the third of eight children in a family of Scottish and Dutch descent. His siblings who played important roles in his career as well as in his emotional life were Gansevoort 1815–1846; Helen Maria 1817–1888; Augusta 1821–1876; Allan 1823–1872; Catherine 1825–1905; Frances Priscilla 1827–1885; and Thomas 1830–1884 who eventually became a governor of Sailors’ Snug Harbor. Part of a well-established and colorful Boston family Allan Melvill spent much time out of New York and in Europe as a commission merchant and an importer of French dry goods. Allan declared bankruptcy in 1830 and died two years later leaving Maria with eight children under the age of 17 and a pile of debt from loans and Allan’s unsuccessful businesses. Soon afterward Maria added an “e†to their surname—perhaps to hide from collection agencies although scholars are not sure exactly why. Later inscription to the pastedown "To Miss Murray In memory of P. F. M. July 1876." Ownership inscription opposite the title page "Fanny Melville Tuesday after Easter 1876 N.Y." In fine condition.
