The work directly influenced Huey P. Newton and the founding of the Black Panther Party. Often overlooked Williams is considered a crucial figure of the Black Power Movement in the late '60s; when this book was published he was serving as a sort of Tokyo Rose or Lord Haw-Haw of Cuba in exile there. A nice just about uniform sets of one of the great American poetry cycles. Volume Two won the National Book Award. The textured paper of the dustwrappers lends itself to soiling. Meachem inscribed the book on a sheet laid down onto the front pastedown "My dearest Marian an other Catherine - Annie" and again on the dedication page "Marian - love Annie" where Meachem is listed as the dedicatee. Meachem won an Obie Award for her portrayal of Catherine in the debut of the 1958 off-Broadway production of the play. The book is additionally Inscribed by the play's director Herbert Machiz. Tennessee Williams worked alongside Seldes when she starred with Tallulah Bankhead in his ill-fated production of The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore. 96152Rare original photograph of Olympic Gold medalist Jim Thorpe and Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams smiling together at the New England Sportsman's and Boat Show in 1952. Signed by both Williams and Thorpe. Double matted and framed; the photograph measures 9.5 inches by 7.5 inches. The entire piece measures 16 inches by 14 inches. An exceptional . American athlete and Olympic gold medalist James Francis Thorpe became the first Native American to win a gold medal for the United States in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm Sweden. Considered one of the most versatile athletes of modern sport he also played collegiate and professional football and professional basketball. Ted Williams played his entire Major League Baseball career as a left fielder for the Boston Red Sox from 1939 to 1960. In the 1941 All-Star Game Williams batted fourth behind Joe DiMaggio who was in the midst of his record-breaking hitting streak having hit safely in 48 consecutive games. The typescript for the 1955 publication of the opera by G. Ricodi and Co. which coincided with its first performance at Tulane University in New Orleans on January 17 1955. The original one-act play was written before 1946 but never performed as a play only an opera during Williams's lifetime. It was not published until it appeared in 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and Other One-Act Plays in 1966. OCLC locates no copies of this typescript and it is not found in the Harry Ransom or Fred W. 1946157372New York: A New Directions Book 1946-48-49-51-58. Say it! No ideas but in things First editions first printings of Williams's epic poem Book 2 a review copy from the library of Ruth and Mark Schorer with their bookplate on the front pastedown and a typed letter signed by the publisher Hubert Creekmore loosely inserted. This is an excellent association sent to a significant friend and colleague of the author with a request for his comments. Mark Schorer 1908-1977 was a writer and critic who earned his MA at Harvard and went on to chair the University of California's English Department from 1960 to 1965. He was a witness during the 1957 obscenity trial for Allen Ginsberg's Howl testifying in defence of the poem. He was one of Williams's "teaching pals" quoted in Mariani p. 546 and in his autobiography Williams recalls attending a two-week English conference in 1946 in Salt Lake City Utah where "Walter Van Tilburg Clark Caroline Gordon Mark Schorer all swam with us in a nearby pool evenings and at Alta we rode in the ski-lift specially connected for us over the snowless ground now blossoming profusely on the slopes between the tall firs. thrilling to be lifted that way above the mountainside feet dangling high over the earth to the shoulder of the slope". In his letter Creekmore acknowledges this friendship despite misspelling Schorer as "Shorer" a fairly common error: "knowing you are a friend of Williams I wonder if you would read this new section of his longest and most mature poem and send us as soon as possible some comments on it". Paterson was influenced by Ulysses and embarked upon with the intent "to objectify the man himself as we know him and love him and hate him" quoted in Lloyd p. 190. The epic began life as an 85-line poem of the same name which won the Dial award in 1926. Williams struggled with "the impossible poem Paterson" admitting in his autobiography that it "called for a poetry such as I did not know". However his belief in the project sustained him: "A cold east wind today that seems to blow from the other side of the world - at the same time to be blowing all poetry out of life. A man wonders why he bothers to continue to write. And yet it is precisely then that to write is most imperative for us. That if I can do it will be the end of Paterson Book IV. The ocean of savage lusts in which the wounded shark gnashes at his own tail is not our home. It is the seed that floats to shore one word one tiny even microscopic word is that which can alone save us" Letter to José Garcia Villa 1950 quoted in Wallace. 5 vols octavo. The Domesday Book - Millennium Edition is the complete text of the Domesday survey of William the Conqueror's kingdom in a limited edition of 450 No. 82 perfect facsimile copies. It is bound in a replica of the earliest known Domesday binding the Winton Domesday and very few copies remain. This is the de-luxe edition which includes companion volumes and maps which help bring to life this fascinating part of our heritage. A two-volume modern English translation typeset so the text follows the original hand-written script line-for-line. These volumes are superbly hand-bound within a linen spine and hand-made paper sides. Also included is a people and places index volume bound to match the translation. This volume includes an introduction and a dedication sheet carrying the number 82 / 450 . Domesday is presented with a matching solander box containing modern Ordnance Survey maps with overlaid Domesday sites light water stain to 30% of the spine. The two-volume facsimile of Great Domesday is bound in brown embossed EI calfskin to the 12th Century design of the Winton Domesday which is one of only thirteen known English Romanesque bindings that have survived. The two volumes of the facsimile of the Domesday Book are handsomely bound in antique style blind-stamped calf housed in a custom reversed calf antique style satchel with ties. Domesday has been called one of the three most famous books in the world alongside the Bible and the Koran and is acknowledged as being one of the most important historical documents of the first millennium. William the Conqueror�s great survey has been used as a working document ever since its commission at Christmas 1085 and remained pre-eminent as a census of England until the 19th Century. It was last consulted for legal precedent in 1982 896 years after it was written. Domesday Book encompasses two independent works in originally two physical volumes. These were "Little Domesday" covering Norfolk Suffolk and Essex and "Great Domesday" covering much of the remainder of England and parts of Wales except for lands in the north which later became Westmorland Cumberland Northumberland and the County Palatine of Durham. 1868175067Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons 1868. One of the earliest European residents of Burma First edition of this account of efforts to link Britain's Indian possessions with China. Williams proposed a trade and telegraph route stretching from Rangoon through Sichuan to Nanjing and Shanghai as well as a telegraph connection from Mandalay to Calcutta. This copy was owned by Hermann Heinrich Krüger an officiating consul at Rangoon for the North German Confederation and has his signature on the half-title. Clement Williams 1833-1879 "joined the 68th Light Infantry as an assistant surgeon and was sent to Burma in 1858. After mastering the Burmese language he was posted to Mandalay Upper Burma by 1861 where he gained the friendship and trust of King Mindon by treating various members of the royal court for cataracts and other medical issues. Because of his extraordinary access to the King Dr. Williams was appointed 'correspondent' to the Chief Commissioner of Lower Burma Arthur Phayre and in 1863 he was elevated to the position of Political Agent. As such he was involved in the negotiation of the commercial treaty in 1863 and played an active role in the economic and political development of Upper Burma" Royal Ontario Museum. In 1863 Williams received permission from Mindon to seek a trade route from India to China via the Irrawaddy relying on Burmese guides to obtain navigational information and sketch maps from local communities. While unrest on the Chinese border prevented him from reaching his destination his published account laid the groundwork for future expeditions with the same goal including the 1868 Sladen expedition of which he was a member. The large folding map shows the main proposed route and also highlights two potential shorter routes including one proceeding from Rangoon along China's south coast to Canton. This copy is from the second issue; the first does not have the letterpress note tipped in opposite page viii. Octavo. Bigelow assisted in the Broadway production of Williams' Rose Tattoo in 1951 and also edited several of Williams' works including the novel The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone for New Directions. Tall octavo original half brown cloth original slipcase. $3200.Signed limited edition published the same year as the first edition and including the story The Kingdom of Earth not included in the trade edition number 17 of only 100 numbered copies out of a total of approximately 135 signed on the copyright page by Tennessee Williams.One of four collections of short fiction by Tennessee Williams. At the time the first edition of Hard Candy was published Tennessee Williams wanted to include Kingdom of Earth a story about ""relations among a dying transvestite his sluttish bride and his brother"" Hart 831. However his publisher fearing an obscenity-based backlash encouraged him to accept a compromise. Eventually Williams agreed to publish the first edition of this collection without Kingdom of Earth but demanded that a special signed limited edition including the story be published that same year. Thus this signed limited edition uses the original sheets from the first edition of Hard Candy but bears a cancel title page with a signed limitation statement on the verso and contains Kingdom of Earth at the end. While the limitation page claims that 100 copies of this work were published that number is believed to refer to the number of copies intended for Williams' own private distribution of which this copy is number 17. Approximately 35 additional copies some signed were published for the use of the publisher but those are all believed to contain various non-numeric notations on the limitation page. Most of the original 100 copies were later destroyed making this the rarest of Williams' works. Crandell A13.I.b. He fought in the battles of Goes and Middelburgh was present when William of Orange was assassinated helped capture the assassin and apparently almost killed the Duke of Parma during the Siege of Venlo. In 1590 he wrote A brief discourse of war with his opinions concerning some part of martial discipline which is considered one of the best English military works from its time. The present work was published posthumously and is an incomplete reconstruction from a manuscript that Williams wrote but is still very insightful. It is here present in first edition. The second appeared in 1809 when Sir Walter Scott rediscovered it and included it in the first volume of A collection of scarce and valuable tracts. The text has also been republished a few times in the 20th century.With the text "Bound by Riviere & Son" giltstamped at the lower front turn-in and a 19th-century annotation on the first free flyleaf about the author's family. The binding is somewhat soiled with a crescent moon shaped stain on the front board. The work is somewhat browned throughout especially around the edges of the leaves it has been cut somewhat short affecting some of the printed marginal notes. Uncut in the original boards First edition in English revised and translated from the illustrated folio edition published in Paris in 1813. The work was originally serialized in seven parts from 1810 to 1813. It contains Humboldt's reflections on South and Central American culture and "crosses many traditional genres of literary and scientific writing ranging from travelogue and essay to scientific treatise art historiography and anthology" Kutzinski and Ette p. xxix. Drawn from research undertaken on his travels with Aimé Bonpland from 1799 to 1804 this is Humboldt's guide to the "origin and first progress of the arts among the natives of America" including "specimens of the remains of their architecture sculpture historical painting and hieroglyphics" vol. I p. 1. It established Humboldt as a key figure in the development of Mesoamerican studies and provided indispensable observations regarding botany zoology geography and geology that gave root to later studies. Humboldt aimed to offer a holistic view of world civilizations rather than merely measuring everything by the Greek and Roman model: "my own recent investigations on the natives of America appear at an epocha in which we no longer deem unworthy of attention whatever is not conformable to that classical style" vol. I pp. 5-6. "Humboldt's intent was to work against misunderstanding the New World as a historyless 'realm of nature' populated by uncivilized roving hordes. His purpose was to develop an alternative perspective on the interrelations of nature and culture in the Americas a view as it were whose worldwide entanglements would not permit Europeans to define 'America' as their Other" Kutzinski & Ette p. xvi. Humboldt argued for the equality of the "old" and the "new" by showing that they were of the same geological age. This edition was translated into English by Humboldt's friend the writer Helen Maria Williams. Williams translated works from French into English along with publishing poems novels and letters of her own. These included eye-witness accounts of her controversial solo travels around France during the Revolution of which she was a staunch defender. In addition to being an associate of figures such as Mary Wollstonecraft Francisco de Miranda and Thomas Paine she was famously the subject of William Wordsworth's first published poem "On Seeing Miss Helen Maria Williams Weep at a Tale of Distress" 1787. The "Advertisement from the Editor" states: "the Picturesque Atlas in Folio being from its Nature of too high a Price for Readers in general is has been judged necessary to Reprint the Text in two Octavo Volumes" vol. I pp. iii-iv. This edition retains 20 of the plates included in the 1813 French edition of which 5 are beautifully hand-coloured. 2 vols octavo. In very good condition indeed 'Robots' 2005 is an animated science-fiction comedy set in a world populated entirely by mechanical beings. Robin Williams voices 'Fender' a fast-talking scrap-collecting robot whose manic humour and improvisational energy dominate the film. The story follows idealistic inventor Rodney Copperbottom as he challenges corporate greed and planned obsolescence. Williams's performance provides anarchic comic relief while reinforcing the film's themes of creativity individuality and social responsibility beneath its colourful family-friendly surface. 20th Century Fox unknown

Occasional minor foxing slight bump to head of spine of volume two generally a very handsome set. "Williams a Scots landscape painter returned from an extended tour of Greece and Italy in 1818. The impressions gained on this tour gave a particular character to his work which earned him the soubriquet 'Grecian' Williams. In 1820 William published a 2-vol. account of his tour Travels in Italy Greece and the Ionian Islands in a series of Letters. In 1822 he exhibited his Greek paintings in Edinburgh and published a catalogue: Views in Greece.painted in watercolours. The Select Views appeared in parts from 1827-9 the plates engraved by W.
