1945Pv1423SIGNED First Edition one of only 5000 first printing copies of this high spot of twentieth century drama. With The Glass Menagerie Williams set out to create a new kind of "Plastic Theatre" a highly expressionistic language of the stage to replace what he saw as the stale conventions of realism. In theatrical terms Williams's approach has been called Brechtian: It uses devices meant to create what the German playwright and dramaturge Bertolt Brecht Threepenny Opera Mother Courage and Her Children called the "alienation effect." Williams succeeded thereby revolutionizing American theater. Within two weeks of opening on Broadway in 1945 the play won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play catapulting Williams to fame. In the words of the citation the award was offered "To Tennessee Williams for his play 'The Glass Menagerie' and its sensitive understanding of four troubled human beings" New York Times.<br />8vo. The play also daringly showcased the burden of sexuality repressed in the agony of her husband Brick Pollitt. In spite of the public controversy Cat stirred up it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critics Circle Award for that year. Contains 167 albumen photographs printed on high gloss photographic paper. Introductory presentation photograph that reads: "To Mabel from Bert" on front pastedown followed by 103 images of the San Francisco Bay Area; 29 images of Santa Clara; and 34 images of the Yosemite area. Sizes vary although most are a variant of 3" x 4". A few have been artfully trimmed and perhaps about one half of the images have been captioned. The final image is of a well-dressed young man seated on a swing captioned: "Yours Truly Albert L. Williams." Original string ties present but detached modest wear on the boards the presentation inscription is a bit smeared but still readable some of the images show some fading but overall a near fine and very pleasing album.<br /> <br /> Our research reveals that Albert L. Williams b. circa 1877 was California-born at various times a manufacturer of gloves and/or salesman of gentleman's furnishings. He was married to Mabel sometime between 1902 and 1906. By the time this album was compiled most amateur photographers had switched to more easily usable Kodak cameras and technology. Williams's continued use of the albumen process indicates some devotion to the more complex process and a seriousness about his photography.<br /> <br /> The album is divided into three sections the first shows San Francisco and surrounding area: the Bay Alcatraz Mill Valley the Sutro Baths the Cliff House Land's End Fisherman's Wharf Mission Delores Golden Gate Park with buffalo and elk grazing the Tea Garden and the Boathouse. Notable images include the Night Illumination of City Hall the interior of the cavernous Ferry Depot and nine images of Spanish-American War soldiers - likely the 1st California Volunteer Regiment - marching and at camp preparing to disembark for Manilla with several images of the SS City of Peking and SS City of Sydney troopships in the Harbor. Other subjects include the lighthouses at Tiburon and Point Bonito a few images of the campus of the University of California at Berkeley and the Deaf and Dumb Institute at Berkeley.<br /> <br /> The final two sections feature the "Santa Clara Valley" with many bucolic images showing rustic tents and cabins along the Los Gatos Creek; the town of Wrights including the creek and railroad; and assorted shots of the Russian River the San Lorenzo River Camp Taylor Guerneville and Glen Wood. The types are Stymie Bold for the text and Franklin Gothic for display in Monotype and hand composition. The paper is German mouldmade Zerkall. Proofs of the woodblock prints were photographically reduced to approximately 62% and made into photopolymer plates. The type and plates were printed by letterpress in black ink. Red ink is used on the title page. The binding is a black goatskin spine with title stamped in red with boards covered with laser-cut veneer replicas of woodblocks by Kendrick inked in black. Numbered and signed by the artist. Edition of 300. This item includes the woodblock "Coupling" which was limited an edition of 20 copies plus 5 artist's proofs and 5 publisher's proofs and is accompanied by a copy of the book. Williams one of the most important poets of this century wrote this book of prose-poetry in 1917. He reflects on daily events over the course of a year his readings thoughts observations. To these statements made in language plain-spoken yet rising to the beauty and imagination of his poetry he appended further comments or interpretations to make them more intelligible to others. An essay in which Williams explains himself as a figure within the modern movement was added as a prologue. The critic Lawrence Kart claims that the great poetry Williams achieved "would not have been possible without the eruptive prose of 'Kora in Hell'." <br /> <br /> The book includes prints by contemporary artist Mel Kendrick whose own work is in the modernist lineage. Twenty-one images from three series of woodblock prints each involving seven separate blocks in the form of long vertical sheets that can be rolled up like scrolls have been separated and each occupy the recto page of a leaf in the book with pages of text in between. <br /> <br /> "Coupling" the long woodblock print as originally conceived by Kendrick in the scroll format measures 99 1/2 by 27 1/2 inches and was printed by hand by Stacy Petty and Robert Fisher at the artist's studio in New York City using black ink on Kozo natural a Japanese paper. A remarkable letter in answer to Gallagher's inquiry stating that Esquire is planning a feature on the salutary effects of a number of drugs on the market mentioning an article in Life magazine regarding the drug Dilantin and wondering if Williams would agree to participate in the article: "Dear Miss Gallagher - I am very interested in pills that don't contain barbiturates or amphetamine. At night I take two doriden tablets and a 100 milligram mellaril - and I have no deleterious effect from them. Pills are dangerous but sometimes danger must be accepted. I think we all know that. I shall try to get hold of the piece on Dillantin sic which is a pill I never heard of. I always check out with my doctor whatever I take. To combine pills with an excessive amount of alcohol is the greatest indiscretion and one I avoid." William's apparently failed to follow his own advice. His death in 1987 was brought about by his choking on the cap of a pill container. John Robert Morrison son of the first Protestant missionary in China Robert Morrison was a British colonial official and interpreter. In 1834 Morrison replaced his late father as Chinese Secretary and Interpreter to the Superintendents of British Trade in China. In the same year the first edition of his A Chinese commercial guide was published. Morrison's Guide proved to be an extremely useful and successful publication. In the second 1844 and third editions published after Morrison's death in 1843 Morrison's name was retained on the title-page but the text was largely rewritten by Samuel Wells Williams. The revisions were so extensive that in the fourth 1856 and fifth 1863 editions Morrison's name was dropped altogether and replaced by that of Williams. The American Presbyterian missionary and linguist Samuel Wells Williams 1812-1884 arrived in China in 1833 as supervisor of the printing press of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions at Canton. He later served as editor of The Chinese Repository; collaborated with Bridgman on the Chinese Chrestomathy in the Canton Dialect 1842; assisted Walter Medhurst in completing his English-Chinese Dictionary 1848; served as Secretary of the United States Legation to China from 1855; wrote A tonic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Canton dialect 1856; played a key role in the negotiation of the Treaty of Tientsin which ensured toleration of both Chinese and foreign Christians; and on his return to America was appointed the first Professor of Chinese language and literature in the United States at Yale. This copy was retained by Williams and presented to his secretary the year before his death inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Rosalie Thurman best wishes Tennessee Williams 1982". The volume collects short stories written during Williams's "golden age" between 1948 and 1954 which together "establish his place in the tradition of the American short story" Vannatta p. 51. The signed limited issue was printed and bound for Williams's private distribution. It is identical to the trade issue simply titled Hard Candy published in August 1954 save for the cancel title page and the inclusion of the story "The Kingdom of Earth" printed on an additional gathering bound at the rear of the volume pp. 225-242. This copy is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn b. 1940 the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express for over three decades with his 1988 ownership inscription on the front pastedown. We purchased this book in a lot of Williams books at auction. Two of the books had Colin Hardie's name in them and most of them at a 2 or 3 letter code inside the back cover. The letters in the back are DXL. Therefore we think this was likely Colin Hardie's copy though his name is not in it. Colin Hardie was an Inkling. There were approximately sixteen people at C. S. Lewis' funeral - Colin Hardie was one of them. <br><br>Quarter tan cloth on gray paper. A label in the upper right of the front cover has a double line border and the title inside the border. 90 pp. Uncut fore edge and bottom edge. <br><br>CONDITION: The book is VG with light browning on boards and spine. Boards gently scuffed a few tiny closed tears to jacket extremities margins very slightly toned orange jacket spine titling lightly faded else a Very Good or better copy.<br /> <br /> A superlative and early American printing of one of the most enduring children's books in the English language which just celebrated its hundredth anniversary last year. Harper's Bazaar first commissioned the story in 1921 from Margery Williams Bianco at the time a stalled author of adult fiction who hadn't published a work in eight years. What Williams Bianco produced was unlike anything she had written before the story of a boy and his Velveteen Rabbit whose fate from beloved toy to real rabbit serves as an allegory for the difficult passage of childhood to adulthood minus being thrown in a rubbish sack. <br /> <br /> Fittingly Williams Bianco's daughter the child prodigy Pamela Bianco provided the illustrations for the Harper's Bazaar appearance though the first published appearance of the story in book form made use of illustrations by the more established and renowned painter and printmaker William Nicholson. <br /> <br /> Early printings in such fine condition exceedingly hard to come by this one as splendid as a velveteen rabbit on Christmas morning. White on the half-title page and inscribed to "Jewel and Danny Murphy. Salutations!" With letters laid in supporting provenance from White's lifelong friend Howard Cushman and both of the recipients' parents. <p>In 1967 Cushman acted as a public relations consultant for Daniel Murphy then a candidate for delegate to the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention. After Murphy lost his election by 400 votes he hosted a cocktail party to thank those who had helped in his campaign. Cushman was at the Murphy home when Jewel Murphy came downstairs in tears having just finished reading Charlotte's Web and Cushman subsequently asked his friend E. B. White to help him say "thanks" by inscribing a copy of the book for her and her brother. <p>Bound in publisher's pictorial paper-laminate covered boards. Near Fine with light wear to extremities. Tape residue to verso of front free endpaper with associated offsetting to half-title page from Cushman's note which was formerly taped in.
