Il paradosso che gli si para davanti è che, proprio quando la strada si spiana e il suo talento pare trovare il pubblico riconoscimento, lui non ha più molto da dare e da dire: ha già speso le sue energie migliori e si richiude in una spirale di autodistruzione, tra alcol, fumo e risentimento nei confronti del mondo letterario e di quello accademico.
