I motivi della focalizzazione dell'interesse della comunità scientifica su di una sindrome relativamente rara sono rintracciabili nelle peculiarità del suo fenotipo cognitivo, caratterizzato da un profilo a "picchi e valli" che non è stato riscontrato in nessun'altra sindrome. Il profilo cognitivo è caratterizzato da competenze linguistiche avanzate in rapporto alla disabilità intellettiva e da deficit nella cognizione, associate a deficit nella cognizione visuospaziale e nella cognizione sociale. La presenza di capacità linguistiche sviluppate in presenza di disabilità intellettiva ha generato un animato dibattito sull'indipendenza o meno del linguaggio dalle altre funzioni cognitive, riconducibile alla controversia tra le ipotesi modulari e quelle connessioniste. Sono quindi comprensibili le motivazioni che hanno indotto linguisti, genetisti, e neuropsicologi allo studio approfondito della sindrome, generando una quantità rilevante di studi. Il presente volume intende fornire una introduzione agli aspetti cognitivi e psicopatologici correlati alla sindrome, fornendo indicazioni per il trattamento dei deficit sociali e comportamentali.
