One of several English dictionaries published in the early nineteenth century Williams' dictionary is notable for its physical size and broad scope. Williams noted that his aim was to include more words and shorter definitions by omitting the extraneous detail that distinguished the work of his predecessors and presumably his competitors. Williams 1763-1833 was a barrister of the Inner Temple and was called to the bar but he didn't have success as a pleader. He was known instead for his writings. Final two pages are a publisher advertisement. Octavo 8-1/2" x 5". Contemporary calf blind fillets to boards raised bands to spine lettering piece lacking. Light rubbing and a few minor stains and scuffs to boards which are beginning to separate but secure some chipping to spine ends corners bumped and somewhat worn. Moderate toning to text light soiling to margins in a few places. $250. First edition. Williams was the last writer to produce a digest of Great Britain's statute law. 4858WILLIAM WILLIAMS 1731-1811. Williams was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Connecticut. He served in the Continental Congress from 1776 to 1778 and again from 1783 to 1784. He later helped frame the Articles of Confederation and was a member of the Connecticut convention that ratified the Constitution. JONATHAN TRUMBULL JR. 1740-1809. Jonathan Trumbull was son of the only Revolutionary War Governor to side with the patriots. He served in the State Legislature the Continental Army and Comptroller of the Treasury. He was also aide-de-camp to George Washington in 1781 and served in the first three Congresses and becoming Speaker. He was Governor of Connecticut for eleven straight terms. JOSEPH TRUMBULL 1737-1778. Trumbull was the Continental Army’s first commissary general. ADS. 2pg. 12†x 7 ½â€. June 25 1762. Lebanon Connecticut. A partly printed document signed “Wm Williams†“Jona Trumble Jr†and “Jos Trumbleâ€. Williams completely handwrote the portion above his name: “Windham County To wit Lebanon 25th June 1762 Then Mr. Jedediah Strong the Grantor of the Foregoing Deed personally appearing Acknowledged the Same to be his Free Act & Deed Wm Williams Justoâ€; Williams was a Justice of the Peace. The deed is witnessed by Joseph Trumbull and Jonathan Trumbull Jr. as well as Jedediah Strong. The deed is for property in Lebanon being conveyed by Jedediah Strong to the later Governor Jonathan “Trumble.†That was “Brother Jonathan’s†name until he changed it for his entire family to “Trumbull†in 1766; the original spelling is unusual. The deed has a description of the property being transferred. It has a red wax seal by the Strong autograph and professional repairs to the central fold. unknown books

Williams decries the long custom of a "prevailing inattention and ignorance respecting the proper design and performance of psalmody the most painful and pernicious abuse and perversion in this part of divine worship." An important and explicit endorsement from the pulpit of the contemporary cultural erasure of native American styles of sacred public music with its emphasis on fugues and ornamentation and its replacement with the "smooth academic European harmonies" Nitz of English psalmody this an address by the clergyman Williams endorsing the work of Norfolk Musical Society in bringing the state of church singing in Norfolk County more into line with the proper form for worship. Though the annual meetings of the Norfolk Musical Society all featured sermons though the next of none of those sermons seem to survive; this discourse would seem to be of a piece of the advocacy for this musical reform.
