The finely decorated card depicts two detailed vignettes - One with a harp violets forget-me-nots and fern the other an array of roses pansies forget-me-nots and more. The rose array is at the center razor cut laurel wreath with razor cut border decorations depicting sprays of grass or grain with a hashed razor design surrounding the entire border.<br /><br />The letter within is to dear Margaret who had requested the sender to paint a memento of friendship followed by lovely thoughts on the Beauty of mind and grace of a person. Addressed to Miss Margaret Williams on reverse. Letter sheet measures 10" x 8". Cutwork measures 6" x 5 1/2". The cutwork was most likely affixed to the letter at a later date to keep the two pieces together subsequent to Margaret completing the work. <br /><br /> Letter folds. 50336Unpaginated 54 typed leaves printed recto only original typed research report by Williams a veterinarian and Stone a chemist documenting their attempts to effectively perform saliva and urine tests on thoroughbred racing horses to detect the existence of performance-enhancing drugs and stimulants including information on the collection of fluids a chemical analysis of synthetic drugs and the effect of the drugs when administered to horses in varying amounts illustrated with ten original photographs of various substances at a microscopic level and one page with several small original chemical illustrations. Overall very fine condition. 4to. Original cloth-covered boards title impressed in green ink. Some very slight rubbing especially to corners and edges of spine. N.p. Olympia Washington Washington Horse Racing Commission n.d. 1941. The beginning of the report lays out the method used by Williams and Stone to photograph alkaloid-double-salt crystals which they appear to have developed themselves via a series of experiments. They settled upon a method using "triple S panchromatic film and exposing for a period of from five to ten seconds depending on the crystals photographed and the amount of light available" which produced "satisfactory photomicrographs". They follow this with the exact solutions they used to develop the film as well as to fix the photomicrographs. Their pioneering work appears similar to the methods used beginning in the 1970's during Reagan's "War on Drugs" and later to test for performance-enhancing drugs in humans. Collins got Williams a job his old job at the Daily News reviewing crime fiction and worked at Gollancz publisher of this book. 288 pp. Publisher's black cloth lettered in green. A Good copy spine a bit sunned rubbed and a bit chipped at extremities lean to spine offsetting to endpapers lacking the original jacket. The Hakluyt Society was founded in 1846 in London for the publication of primary sources of exploration and discovery expeditions. They were named after Richard Hakluyt 1552-1616 a collector and editor of narratives of voyages and travels. The publications are primarily from English expeditions related to English interests from the 17th century on. The Society is still very active and publishing historic works in a series of publications - the first from 1847-99 the second from 1899-1998 and the third beginning in 1999. In addition there is an Extra series of more extensive books for direct sale to the public. These volumes cover the early search for the North West Passage through Hudson Bay which was determined not to lead to the Pacific Ocean.
