Very good copy.</p><p>Very nice catalogue of books formed by the Protestant divine former rector at St. Stephens in Dublin and the English Congregation in Rome. He was the author of a number of sermons on topical subjects of the day and wrote essays published in his "Correspondence on the Roman Catholic Controversy" published in 1865.</p><p>The auction sale was organized over five days in May in 1867 and included 1717 lots. As the title suggests this is a gentleman's library reflecting a diverse collecting range from early theology to contemporary novels. His voyage and travel section is considerable.</p><p>Allibone S. 18793210122<i>8vo pp. 24; with six plates two with facing printed descriptions and wood-engraved illustrations; last page slightly browned; in modern wrappers.</i><br /><br />Blake alludes to the recent death from diphtheria of Princess Alice the second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as something of a stimulus for his publication.<br /><br />He summarises in his introduction that the 'objects of this little work are twofold: First to teach that many diseases which we are in the way of looking upon as unavoidable are really quite the reverse. Second to show how we may defeat and destroy those twin demons - ignorance and indolence - deadliest enemies of our race.'<br /><br />Blake was still promulgating the miasma theory as the main cause of illness and describes the various defects in buildings and sewers contributing to disease. The suggestive illustrations showing that ill considered design in domestic sewers allowing noxious gases to pervade the home.
