Two volumes number 522 of 540 folio and octavo sizes unpaginated 21 plates and 10 pp. of commentary. "There is No Natural Religion" is a series of gnomic aphorisms written in 1788. The plates were made by relief etching on copper and are among Blake's earliest experiments in this method of etching for his illuminated books. The different states slightly vary in the order of the plates with copy L Series b considered to be Blake's first Illuminated Book. The text as described by Geoffrey Keynes in his description ".state Blake's belief in the spiritual and mystical nature of man and the unreality of vegetable existence and reason. In the first series he has stated and reiterated the inadequacy of regarding man as a creature limited in his perceptions by his natural organs. The idea of a 'natural' religion such as might have been satisfied by his Deist friends Paine Priestly and Godwin is therefore discarded as absurd. In the second series Blake has restated in the first Proposition the essence of the first series and has then proceeded to elaborate the effect that such mental limitation would have on its possessor. He would be filled with loathing and despair seeing nothing beyond himself performing the same dull round over and over again. Man is saved by his poetic or 'prophetic' faculties. These make his desires infinite not bounded by his natural organs allowing Blake to end with the triumphant cry of the mystic announcing his identity with God." <br/><br/>William Blake 1757-1827 is arguably the most original and highly regarded English author - unusual in that he excelled both as an author and an artist. Although thought mad by his contemporaries he was held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work. Blake's work has been spectacularly reproduced through the pochoir technique by Arnold Fawcus and his Trianon Press which has an undeniable claim to being the finest press of its kind in the last century and has long been known for their unrivaled artworks in fine colour printing. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Two volumes both in original quarter brown morocco with hand-marbled paper sides backstrips lettered in gilt twenty-one plates twenty of which were reproduced by colour collotype with water-color washes by hand through stencil and one monochrome engraving printed on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake each page is watermarked with Blake's monogram; the larger of the two volumes is folio size 12" by 9.38 and the smaller octavo size 7.25" by 5" unpaginated 21 plates and 10 pp. of commentary limited edition no. 522 of 540 of the regular editions 616 copies total. Shot struck and mounted by the film's still photographer Bob Willoughby with holograph notation on the verso in his hand. Full provenance available. <br/><br/>After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles photographer Robert Willoughby began working for magazines such as "Life" "Look" and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. He spent the next 20-plus years as a set photographer for every major studio and magazine with his images seen in print literally every week of his career. Original marbled wrappers printed label on upper cover mint as issued. Loosely inserted is the business card for Louis Smith of Smith Glass and Mirror in Northampton with a fine woodcut of a rooster signed by Baskin in pencil. The company is still in business in Northampton. § Limited to 500 copies but surely fewer than that this is number 26. There were also 25 de luxe copies with an extra suite of the plates. Only two copies are recorded as having sold in the last 30 years and this is the only copy we have ever seen. The letter is classic Blake to his great patron: "I hear a voice you cannot hear that says I must not stay I see a hand you cannot see that beckons me away. Naked we came here naked of Natural things & naked we shall return; but while clothed with the Divine Mercy we are richly clothed in Spiritual & suffer all the rest gladly."Bentley Blake Books 94. It was designed by Blake and engraved by Luigi Schiavonetti. Bentley Blake Books 435b."In October 1805 Blake was commissioned by the engraver and would-be publisher Robert H. Cromek to prepare forty drawings illustrating Robert Blair's The Grave a popular "Graveyard" school poem first published in 1743. Cromek planned to select twenty of these designs for a deluxe edition of the poem. In Cromek's first prospectus of November 1805 Blake is named as both the designer and engraver of fifteen designs. Blake etched one image Deaths Door in white-line but Cromek rejected it. The dark power of the white-line print appeals to modern tastes but was far from fashionable in the early nineteenth century. In a second prospectus also of November 1805 Cromek announced that Luigi or Louis Schiavonetti would engrave twelve designs for the new edition. Blake had lost the potentially lucrative commission to engrave his own designs; his relationship with Cromek descended into anger and argument. In spite of their disagreement Cromek included a portrait of Blake as a frontispiece to the volume published in 1808. Cromek promoted the book aggressively and the illustrations to The Grave became Blake's best known work through much of the nineteenth century." With a few annotations in holograph ink throughout. <br/><br/>Rob Salinger Moore works as a television reporter and his wife Micki Reinking is a lawyer who is having difficulty getting pregnant to the chagrin of Rob. While working Rob meets a cellist Maude Irving who he begins dating without mentioning his wife. She soon becomes pregnant as well as his current wife and he ends up marrying Maude as well. To hide his bigamy he uses work as an excuse to spend days with one woman and nights with another. The women eventually find out about each other as they go into labor at the same time and are at the same hospital on the same floor. <br/><br/>Self wrappers. Title page integral with front wrapper is present dated March 7 1984 with a credit for screenwriter Jonathan Reynolds. 127 leaves with last page of text numbered 122.
