With the three engraved vignettes engraved by Blake Volume I pages 127 206 and 225 as well as a full-page plate engraved by Blake after Rubens V.I opposite page 159. <br/><br/>A Very Good set overall with light to moderate foxing near the plates most text leaves are generally in excellent shape. <br/><br/>Lavater 1741-1801 "was the last and most influential of the descriptive physiognomists a class of pseudo-scientists who attempted to ascertain character on the basis of physical features.Von der Physiognomik 1772 an unillustrated two volume book was Lavater's first work on the subject; this was later expanded with the help of Goethe into the four-volume Physiognomische Fragmente 1775-1778 and further perfected in a French translation Essais sur la physiognomie.supervised by Lavater himself. Lavater's physiognomy differed from those of his predecessors in that he paid special attention to the structure of the head particularly the forehead—a form of psychological indexing that exerted some influence on the development of phrenology and brain localization theories in the early nineteenth century. It was designed by Blake and engraved by Luigi Schiavonetti. Bentley Blake Books 435 B."In October 1805 Blake was commissioned by the engraver and would-be publisher Robert H. Cromek to prepare forty drawings illustrating Robert Blair's The Grave a popular "Graveyard" school poem first published in 1743. Cromek planned to select twenty of these designs for a deluxe edition of the poem. In Cromek's first prospectus of November 1805 Blake is named as both the designer and engraver of fifteen designs. Blake etched one image Deaths Door in white-line but Cromek rejected it. The dark power of the white-line print appeals to modern tastes but was far from fashionable in the early nineteenth century. In a second prospectus also of November 1805 Cromek announced that Luigi or Louis Schiavonetti would engrave twelve designs for the new edition. Blake had lost the potentially lucrative commission to engrave his own designs; his relationship with Cromek descended into anger and argument. In spite of their disagreement Cromek included a portrait of Blake as a frontispiece to the volume published in 1808. Some margin browning and light margin chipping else Very Good.<br/><br/> Blake was Pastor of the First Congregational Church in Waupun. Beneath his printed signature is written in ink "Pastor Cong. Ch". Professor Conatty was T.J. Conatty a public school teacher in Kenosha and a prominent figure in the Wisconsin Teachers' Association. He was later implicated in a bribery scheme with James Rood Doolittle Senator from Wisconsin 1857-1869. On Conatty's behalf Doolittle was to use his influence with President Lincoln to obtain cotton permits during General Banks's occupation of New Orleans; in return Doolittle would receive 25% of the profits. We haven't ascertained whether Senator Doolittle is the "Br. Doolittle" to whom this printed letter is addressed. <br/> This unusual ephemeral Civil War broadside is unrecorded. A loose sheet fore-edges untrimmed some still with deckle minimal trimming to top and bottom edges. Only five leaves in the book have engravings recto and verso. § First edition perfect for display or for teaching as the leaves are quite sturdy and can be carefully handled or matted for framing. Blake virtually in a frenzy completed 537 watercolor designs when he was commissioned to illustrate Young’s masterpiece. The publisher only issued the first four ‘Nights’and had Blake engrave and partially etch 43 plates to test the market. The response must have been poor since no further engravings were requested of Blake. Ironically today the poet Young once compared with Shakespeare and Milton is forgotten save for this edition. Between 1909 and 1941 he wrote thirty-six novels five volumes of short stories two original plays and three volumes of memoirs. His range included disturbing studies of the macabre children's stories and historical fiction most notably his Herries Chronicle series set in the Lake District. He worked in Hollywood writing scenarios for two Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films in the 1930s and played a cameo in the 1935 version of David Copperfield. As a gay man at a time when homosexual practices were illegal for men in Britain Walpole conducted a succession of intense but discreet relationships with other men and was for much of his life in search of what he saw as "the perfect friend". He eventually found one a married policeman with whom he settled in the English Lake District. Having as a young man eagerly sought the support of established authors he was in his later years a generous sponsor of many younger writers.
