19256682Cowper School Olney etc: The Blake Society 1925. Hardcover. Very Good. Manuscript and typescript William Blake collection compiled by the scholar and university librarian Queen's University Belfast and Liverpool University Kenneth Povey and his Cambridge friend Basil Mackenzie. This archival collection is housed within the binding of a Blake Society imprint from 1925 The Heads of the Poets which has been cased in a bespoke turquoise buckram binding with the ownership inscription of 'B.W.F. Mackenzie London 1925' on the printed wrappers and 'Amulee' on the first blank. Basil William Sholto Mackenzie 2nd Baron Amulee was a Cambridge friend of the Blake scholar and twice university librarian Kenneth Povey whose manuscript and typescript research into Blake's Heads of the Poets fills the pocket installed by Amulee inside the lower cover. Kenneth Povey 1898-1965 published widely on eighteenth century poetry and is credited by G. E. Bentley with correcting several misattributions of Blake Heads of the Poets. 1980074698Oxford: Oxford at the Clarendon Press 1980. Hardcover. Like New/Near Fine. 15.25" x 12.25" x 4" in slipcase. William Blake. This two volume set is bound in matching navy blue publisher's cloth. Covers are plain with gilt lettering on each spine. Profusely illustrated with facsimile art by William Blake the 537 watercolour drawings and 43 engravings reproduced in these volumes constitute Blake's largest pictorial work. They comprise a page-for-page illustration of all nine Nights of the once famous Night Thoughts on Life Death and Immortality by Edward Young 1683-1765. Transformed by Blake's imagination they shine as an illuminated serial fresco of irony comedy and prophecy. This publication in book form with its high proportion of full-colour plates is a necessary response to the ever-increasing interest in William Blake and to the exacting inclusiveness of a critical scholarship which demands easy access and frequent reference to the artist's entire work. Volume I and II containing the Introduction and Plates will be followed by Volumes III and IV the Commentary. From the dust jacket; Volumes III and IV are NOT included within this listing. Matching illustrated dust jackets in color against an off white background; black lettering on the cover and spine.
