Il voit en lui un des prédicateurs les plus singuliers du 15e siècle. À la fin de la lettre à l’imprimeur Crapelet (en début de volume), Peignot souhaite que “cette bagatelle ne fût tirée qu’à un petit nombre d’exemplaires, destinés seulement aux amateurs éclairés et dignes d’apprécier de pareils monuments...”, car le commun des lecteurs pourrait être choqué par l’extrême bizarrerie du style de Maillard.Tirage à 210 exemplaires.
