Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux 1636-1711 known simply as Boileau was a French poet and satirist whose work had a great influence on French poetry. "Les Embarras de Paris" is a long poem relating the narrator's attempt to sleep and find respite in the tumult and bustle of Paris; the scenes and characters are often exaggerated to create a sense of humorous though desperate chaos. <br/><br/>This edition is illustrated by Albert Dubout 1905-1976 a French cartoonist and painter who created illustrations for many editions of books by well-known authors such as Miguel de Cervantes Voltaire and Edgar Allen Poe n. b. info from Wikipedia. His caricatures printed in wildly bright colours bring out the madness and disorder described in the text. This volume is the second printing with Dubout's illustrations.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Light brown paper wraps with black and green lettering and a four-colour illustration by Dubout on the front wrap all edges uncut frontispiece a full-colour illustration of a man writing at his desk title page in green and black full-colour illustrations by Dubout throughout; octavo size 8.5" by 6.25" pagination: 1-4 5-19 20 1 colophon one of 1000 copies this number 960. Please note that the text is in French. With prior owner inscription "Joyeux Noel." written in pen on the front free endpaper. The original glassine wrapper is still over the wraps.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume is near fine with clean wraps a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and the only prior owner marking we see is the inscription mentioned above; some minor wear to the head and tail of the spine and some slight foxing to the front wrap and to the free endpapers else fine. Boileau was one of the earliest authors to connect the ancient religious practice directly to erotic motivations and concludes with a medical assessment of such deviancy including a final proverb: "Le foüet est pour le Cheval le mords pour l'Asne & la verge pour le dos de l'Insensé."<br>Â Â Â Â Although some sources claim Boileau translated his own text into French the BNF considers that a false attribution and credits Abbé François Granet with both editing and translating the text. This version by Dutch printer du Sauzet features a title-page printed in red and black and simple but elegant typesetting.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary calf spine with gilt-stamped title and date gilt-ruled raised bands and gilt-stamped compartment decorations; covers framed in triple gilt fillets turn-ins with a gilt roll.
