Boileau was one of the earliest authors to connect the ancient religious practice directly to erotic motivations and concludes with a medical assessment of such deviancy including a final proverb: "Le foüet est pour le Cheval le mords pour l'Asne & la verge pour le dos de l'Insensé."<br>Â Â Â Â Although some sources claim Boileau translated his own text into French the BNF considers that a false attribution and credits Abbé François Granet with both editing and translating the text. This version by Dutch printer du Sauzet features a title-page printed in red and black and simple but elegant typesetting.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary calf spine with gilt-stamped title and date gilt-ruled raised bands and gilt-stamped compartment decorations; covers framed in triple gilt fillets turn-ins with a gilt roll. Yep it's the book from which Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO -- anointed The Greatest Film of All Time by the British Film Institute's "Sight and Sound" panelists' poll -- was rather freely adapted. It's a must-have if you're a "books into film" collector and considerably scarcer for some reason in the American edition than in the British which preceded it by a year -- although if you're into that "true first edition" business you really ought to be on the lookout for the French paperback original Denoël 1954 entitled "D'entre les morts" literally "From the Dead." The detective becomes obsessed with the woman eventually falling in love with her but unable to explain her strange trances and her belief in a previous life. When she falls to her death from a tower he is unable to save her due to his fear of heights. He experiences a psychotic break. After his partial recovery he encounters a woman who is nearly the image of his dead love and he becomes obsessed with her. In the end she turns out to be the same person he was in love with--an actress who was hired by his friend in order to hide the murder of his actual wife. It was the basis for the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo starring James Stewart and Kim Novak. Attracting significant scholarly criticism it replaced Citizen Kane as the best film ever made in the 2012 British Film Institute's Sight & Sound critics' poll.
