A very scarce work concerning a historical treatise by Boileau on the establishment of the Church of Rome by Louis Maimbourg. A very scarce work in a full calf binding. The theologian in question is Jaques Boileau. This work complied by Mainbourg. Small ink inscription to the title page. Louis Maimbourg 1610-1686 was a French Jesuit and historian. He was expelled from the Jesuit order by Pope Innocent XI in 1681 due to his public defense of Louis XIV. This work written in French contains his remarks on the historical treatise on the establishment and privileges of the Church of Rome and the bishops. In a full calf binding. Externally sound with rubbing to the boards spine and extremities. Lacking spine label. Small losses to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. It also contains several satires among which an imitation of Juvenals satire. The book is an early illustrated Dutch edition of the work of the French poet translator and critic Nicolas Boileau-Despreéaux 1636-1711. The title refers to the sublime het sublieme in poetry and rhetoric retorica en poezie. The greek original is written by the Greek writer Longin Longinus. Longinus treatise 'Peri Hypsous' dealt with the idea of sublimity and its theoretical repercussions. Boileua's publication is not so much as a translation as a shift in understanding the Longinian sublime for Boileau shifted its dominant association with the style of discourse towards the extraordinary quality and effect of discourse. Boileau emphasises that Longinus’ understanding of the sublime differs from the idea of the sublime style or “Stile Sublime” the highest of the three rhetorical styles in Ancient Rhetoric. bron: F.J.L.C.
