1838169364London: Richard Bentley 1838. First edition of Elliot's most influential and historically valuable work. His firsthand account of his travels includes chapters on the lives of the peasantry and the taxes imposed on them the influence of Russia and the region's religions. Elliott 1803-1875 was educated at the East India Company College and later served as an artillery officer in India. During his life he published several travel diaries capturing each location before the Industrial Revolution. He later went on to become the rector of Tattingstone in Suffolk. Provenance: Sir James Cosmo Melvill with his armorial bookplate in each volume. Melvill 1792-1861 was the last secretary of the East India Company. "As chief secretary Melvill corresponded with many of the company's principal servants in India and with friends and critics alike of the company at home" ODNB. 2 vols octavo 215 x 135 mm. Lithographed frontispiece in each vol 2 engraved maps. Contemporary dark blue straight-grain morocco by Henington & Galabin with their ticket spine with raised bands ruled in gilt black morocco labels lettered in gilt covers panelled in gilt and decoratively panelled in blind board edges tooled in gilt inner dentelles in blind marbled endpapers and edges. Extremities worn boards with some stripping colour retouched tips slightly bumped Vol. I cracked at gutter at Chapter I but sound occasional finger soiling and staining internally. A very good copy.
