This is a very early work from the American perspective on the First World War. Russell was a prolific writer and was noted for his military and historical works and was a member of the American Historical Association. No publisher or place of publication are indicated so it is possible this was sold by subscription. It was illustrated with nearly 100 photographs from 'the scenes of strife'. It aptly described the war as the most terrible conflict in history. The copyright was held by J. R. Peper. hardcover

Caption below reads: "Leon saw a rakish schooner flit by. He gasped and held his breath. There came a shock and a long-continued grind as the bow of the Sprite scraped more than half the length of the schooner which then darted out of sight." Fun and colorful front wrapper graphics.
