18120068121812. Good . 1 leaf folded into 4 pages with handwritten signed letter on one page dated 23 Dec. 1812 Washington City. In response to a letter from Doctor Alexander Blair in Buffalo N.Y. Cushing enclosed his commission as surgeon's mate with Pennsylvania's 5th Regiment of Infantry. The commission is not present. Thomas Humphrey Cushing 1755-1822 fought during the American Revolution; he was adjutant and inspector general of the Army in 1797 1798 and from 1800 to 1807. In 1811 he was arrested and court martialed on charges of disobedience and misuse of government funds; a year later he was acquitted on most of the charges and received an official reprimand. Two months later on July 2 1812 he was promoted to brigadier general. He served as adjutant general of the Army from July 6 1812 to March 12 1813. After that he was made commander of Military District No. 1; after the war he retired from the Army and was soon appointed collector of cusoms for the port of New London Conn. Alexander Blair 1789-1830 had just completed his medical studies and opened an office and drug store in Washington Pa. in the spring of 1812; after war was declared in June 1812 he applied for a commission as a surgeon's mate which he recieved. He was promoted to surgeon in March 1814; after the war ended in 1815 he returned to Washington Pa. In Good Condition: creased; paper is browned and slightly discolored; starting to separate along folds; chip out of one side without loss of text. unknown

"When the Wilmot Proviso against slavery in the territories acquired from Mexico produced angry debates Benton denounced the proviso but he also refused to support the southern demand for territorial expansion. He insisted that slavery where it existed was in no danger while geography climate and the opposition of existing territorial populations would prevent its expansion. Though a slaveholder himself Benton described the institution as an incurable evil preserved only by racial fears and animosities. He hoped that it would ultimately disappear but meanwhile he prayed that it would never be expanded . In 1857 the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott decision ruled that the federal government could not bar slavery from any federal territory. Benton answered this ruling with a 192-page Historical and Legal Examination of the Dred Scott Case 1857 which glorified the Union appealed for sectional peace and denounced the decision as bad constitutional law" ANB. "Thomas Hosmer Shepherd 1792 - 1864 war ein britischer Aquarellmaler bekannt vor allem für seine detailgetreue Darstellung von Gebäuden oftmals mit lebendigen Straßenszenen die Menschen Pferde und Kutschen zeigten. Er arbeitete in London und später in Edinburgh Bath und Bristol. Seine Zeichnungen waren Vorlage für zahlreiche Stahlstiche die auch Bücher illustrierten. Shepherd arbeitete hauptsächlich für Frederick Crace 1799 - 1859 einem Innenarchitekten und Kommissar für Kanalisation. Ursprünglich sollte er die Gebäude festhalten die kurz vor dem Abriss standen. Er zeichnete dann aber auch die Neubauten. Shepherds Bilder liefern heute den Forschern Hinweise auf das Bauwesen die Architektur und Geschichte im 19. Jahrhundert. Heute sind viele dieser Zeichnungen Bestandteil der Crace collection im British Museum aber auch durch ein Einzelwerk das den Lesesaal zeigt. Die private Sammlung von Friedrich Crace 1799 - 1859 kam zum Britischen Museum durch seinen Sohn John Gregory Crace im Jahr 1878. Plates feature two panels each with two views 6 inches wide 3.5 inches tall. A celebration of Regency and Adams classicism although there is a little bit of every style and type of building then standing in London. A superb tour guide into bygone London. Some foxing throughout most pronounced on first title page. There are three title/half title pages in all. Note that one title is watermarked 1829 the other 1827. Other than offsetting at times most text pages are clean while plate pages tend to have some browning and soiling. Many tissue guards have survived. Some shelfwear to binding along edges and corners.
