Son livre « La Vendée » édité à plusieurs reprises fut un véritable succès 50000 exemplaires Il fut aussi animateur de revues historiques comme la célèbre Revue du Bas Poitou.Reconnu par ses pairs dans les années 1930-1950 il nouera des amitiés profondes avec d’autres intellectuels de cette époque et aura connu les plus grands de la première moitié du XXème siècle : Claudel Mauriac Guitton ou encore Gabriel Marcel .Il obtient le grade de Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres en 1960 et le grand PRIX de la prose de l’Académie Française l’année suivante.
