196534796New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1965. First American edition. 8vo original dark red cloth lettered in blue and gilt on spine and upper cover in the original pictorial dustjacket. 10 274 pp. A fine copy of the book. The jacket with just a tiny bit of edgewear. FIRST EDITION. A fascinating look into the mind of Camus winner of the Nobel prize for literature in 1957. "This volume written at the height of his career as a novelist constitutes more of an involuntary self-portrait revealing a conscience tormented throughout this dark decade of history by the need to find an ethic in an absurd world. A generation has looked to Camus as the conscience of our time; here we see what fed that spirit how even frailty forged that strength." - Knopf Alfred A. Knopf hardcover
