19482403788John Lehmann 1948. 1st UK 1st impression. Good/Good.
The Norman port of Le Havre serves a physical terminus for Lantier in Zola's La Bête Humaine and a generation later we now see another anti hero Bernard Lehameau at the end of the line: washed-up frustrated and confused after serving in the 1914-18 war. Written in 1939 but set in 1916 it anticipates Queneau's later more famous works such as Exercices de Style and Zazie dans le Métro. Very rare indeed in this early 1948 translation. There is an ink stain to bottom of final thirty pages or so and the jacket has some loss to spine and is very fragile and a little grubby.
. John Lehmann unknown
